5 Reasons To Make A New Year's Resolution

New Year, New Me. This is such a cliché saying at the beginning of every year. While you cannot completely change yourself, you can come up with good resolutions to better yourself. Resolutions are all about sticking to a goal to better yourself for the whole year. Here are some reasons to consider before you completely forgo the resolution.

1. It shows you are actually trying.

If you make a New Year's resolution, you are trying to make yourself a better you. Making a resolution will make that goal more attainable, and real. If you write it down, it will make it even more real.

2. It is the beginning of a new year.

The new year gives you an opportunity to deal with things you haven't effectively dealt with in the past. Maybe you have held a grudge against a family member or a friend. Given the new year, this will give each of you an opportunity to discuss your issues and hopefully overcome your differences.

3. It's a tradition.

Traditions are important to everyone. It is important to make a resolution, just like it is important to wear green on St. Patrick's Day.

4. It is important to society.

Society depends on goal-oriented behaviors. Whether it is about setting a goal for drinking more water or building a community pool to promote a healthy lifestyle, resolutions will aid in making a better society.

5. Making a resolution will make it easier to set other goals.

It is important to remember that everything takes time. Do not get discouraged if you are unable to quit smoking the first day you try, or you gain 0.2 pounds a few days after you start. What matters is progress. The best successes take time and resilience.

If you decide to make a resolution, take these points into consideration. If you write it down, I suggest you put the paper somewhere you can see it daily. Continue to look at your resolution each day of the new year, and eventually, you will achieve it. Do not stop looking at your ultimate goal if you hit a bump in the road. You will achieve your resolution. When you achieve your resolution, it will make it easier to make other goals in the future. Start with a simple resolution if it makes you more comfortable. Maybe instead of trying to buy a car right off the bat, you start with something simple like saving $5 a day. There is no such thing as a goal that is too small or too simple. What matters is that the resolution is important to you and you are able to attain it.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way.
