I have been in the restaurant business for awhile now. I don't think people actually understand how stressful waiting tables can actually be. Trust me it's not easy. So here are 5 reasons why you should tip your server.
1. Waiters and waitresses get paid $2.13 an hour. Yeah.
For those of you who don't know most waitresses get paid $2.13 a hour. Some servers have to tip out the busboys, bartenders, food runners, ect. Average paychecks every 2 weeks can be as low as 20 dollars or even less. So servers really depend on your tip.
2. Don't shoot the messenger: Cold food and overcooked steak isn't the servers fault.
So, your fries are cold and your steak is extra well done when you ordered a medium rare steak. Your customer is pissed and makes some smart remark to you. You're wanting to snap back at your customer and say, "Since when did I become a server and a chief at the same time?" I just deliver your food, make your drink, check on you to make sure your doing okay, keep re-filling your drink and close out your ticket. No big deal. Just have to smile through the situation.
3. Even if you're not good at math, figuring out your tip is pretty, incredibly easy, dude.
You should tip your server at least 15 percent, if you've had decent/good service. You should tip 20 percent if you've had excellent service and more than 20 percent for outstanding service. Most restaurants have the percentages and amounts at the bottom of the ticket or you can just Google it or use the calculator on your phone.
4. Customers can be hard to work with.
Hey are you? I'll have a diet coke, Oh I'm great, thanks for asking! Not to mention kids spilling drinks, customers changing seats and messing up the seat number you just marked them as you put in their order. People love complaining about the price! Sorry honey, I don't make the prices. Some customers love taking advantage of you or belittling you. And don't you love the extra needy and rude customers?! Just part of the server life I guess. Not all people are like this, there are actually generally nice people in the world. I guess my point is at the end of the day always tip your server because you don't know what they have to go through to make sure you're happy.
