In the past week or so, a hot topic has been the Women's March on Washington. More than 3.3 million women and men marched through the streets in cities not only in the U.S., but all around the globe. They protested for their rights, for their freedoms, and for others' as well. What irks me about the Women's March on Washington is the astounding backlash that all the people, and the movement itself, got. Countless people around me were telling me, and still are, how stupid the March was. That it was pointless, and that feminism is "just women throwing hissy fits for rights they already have." But that's wrong; the March, and feminism, are both very important to society.
1. Feminism Promotes Equality
Despite apparently popular belief, feminism isn't about women become equal to men. It's about two sexes become equal on all playing fields.
2. The March Brought People Together
The March served more of a purpose than women shouting for equality. The Women's March brought together people of all races, religions, genders, and sexualities. All of these people united together for one wholesome cause.
3. It's A Good Message For Children
Children's minds are fresh, and the March was a good demonstration for a few different reasons. One, they can see their rights as United States citizens being exercised; two, they can see and hear about how important equality is to the country and the world.
4. It's The Start Of A New Generation
For generations to come, people will carry on the feminist ideals. Generation after generation, feminists are fighting for the rights of women and those who identify as such. The March is a huge key in that legacy.
