Last May, the city of Salina approved a slight increase to the town's sales tax, coming into effect on Oct. 1, 2016. Where will this new influx of money go? The funds will be distributed to many projects such as road maintenance, infrastructure protection and even the enhancement of the Smoky Hill River. Bringing the river channel back to its former glory is, in my humble opinion, one of the most exciting objectives to come out of the new tax plan. Here's five positive results the Smoky Hill River initiative will have on the Salina community.
1. City Beautification
The restoration of the Smoky Hill River will add a new-and-improved flair to the city. One thing Salina is best known for is the annual River Festival taking place during the summer, and what better way to pay tribute to our celebration than to get the river flowing again? This project will revitalize an iconic Salina gem, attracting current and future residents alike.
2. Job Creation
Needless to say, a project of this caliber will take a bit of time to accomplish. Jobs concerning the renovation will arise as a result. Upon completion, Salina will see an increase in jobs along the river channel, as entrepreneurs take advantage of the rise of residents and visitors to the area. Such businesses could include eateries, hotels, boat rental facilities, gift shops and more.
3. Increase in Local Commerce
Local residents won't be the only ones to take advantage of the river and its resources. With potential statewide attraction to the Smoky Hill River, Salina's economy will greatly benefit from visitor traffic.
4. Nostalgia Brought to Life
Although some may not have been a part of the Salina community to see it at the time, the former glory of the Smoky Hill River is a stark comparison to what it is today. To breathe life back into the river for future generations to enjoy would be a contribution to the longevity of the town, and a testimony to its celebrated past.
5. Recreational Opportunities
A flowing river brings many activities for citizens to engage in. From boat riding to afternoon picnicking, the Smoky Hill River will be an excellent addition to recreational life in Salina.
I was happy to have voted "yes" on the ballot for the river renovation proposal, and I was even happier to see that the majority of Salina residents did as well. I don't know where I'll end up in 20 years, but I do know one thing: I'll be making several trips back home to see the rejuvenated treasure that is the Smoky Hill River.
