So, Childish Gambino is dropping a new record, called "Awaken, My Love!" and we're all pretty excited. Donald Glover, the man behind Childish Gambino, explained in a Billboard interview that the album is going to be "an exercise in just feeling and tone." Here are 5 reasons why it's going to blow our minds.
1. The first single is amazing.
The first song released from the album, titled "Me and Your Mama," is nothing like anything that Childish Gambino has ever done before. "Me and Your Mama" definitely backs Gambino's words about "feeling and tone," totally disregarding a typical musical format, and inducing soulful vocals as well as interesting key changes. It's funky and weird in ALL the right places. The song is available to listen on YouTube and Spotify, so, please, if you love yourself, take time out of your day to hear the track.
2. The second single is even better.
The second song released just last Thursday, titled "Redbone," is much more relaxed than its predecessor, but still retains the same funky, yet soulful feel as the first single. "Redbone" is the perfect song to chill in your room and do homework to, or maybe just relax with a beer. Gambino also opts to raise the pitch of his voice in this song to a point where it doesn't even sound like himself singing, which I would usually hate, but it sounds so good. Overall, it sounds like Gambino is truly having fun with his music, and is working on his vision, and not anyone else's.
3. Childish Gambino has suddenly became more than an Internet rapper.
I think we all know that Donald Glover is more than his persona Childish Gambino. He's also an actor, comedian, and writer, with many accolades under his belt. But, while his past records have been good, they have a certain tone to them that makes it seem like Gambino just hasn't found his groove yet. Until now.
4. The hype is real.
I don't know about you, but I know many people that are excited to listen to the rest of this album. From what we've heard so far, we shouldn't be disappointed.
5. It's not going to be anything we expect.
You can tell that this record is going to be A LOT different from his previous music endeavors, Camp, Because the Internet, and Kauai, mostly because of how surreal the music is. The tone of these two singles actually represent the visuals of his previous music videos, which a have a surreal quality to them. I don't know if he's trying to make his new music match the tone of this previous music videos, but you can't deny the parallels. If you ever have a chance, I would definitely check Childish Gambino's music videos out, especially "Sweatpants," "3005," and "Telegraph Ave," which all reportedly have a connection to the sci-fi movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I get chills from both the visuals and the music, if that's any indication to go look it up right now. I'll wait.
