Like many of us, I first heard Solange Knowles' voice on the theme song for "The Proud Family." Even though the song also features Destiny's Child, it is Solange's opening vocals that really stood out to me. From that point on, I was mesmerized with all things Solange. I have been a fan of every move she makes. From having her son Julez, to becoming a full-fledged star in her own right, Solange has more than proved herself. Here are 5 reasons I love the soulful singer.
1. Vocal
Solange uses her vocal cords for more than singing. From speaking out about the importance of Black Lives Matter to writing her own article about how she has been a victim of hostility by another concert goer at an outdoor concert, Solange isn't afraid to let people know how she feels. Not only does she write about her experiences, but her words also serve as an important source of inspiration to young girls and encourages them to be themselves no matter what.
2. Hair
Solange was one of the first women in mainstream media to embrace her natural hair. I know for me, how important it was to see a beautiful woman acknowledge the hair that grows out of her scalp and learn to love it. As a black woman, even seeing Solange bald made me happy because she wasn't scared to say, 'This is me, natural hair and all. Take it or leave it.' Not only did she inspire me to learn to love my hair, but a lot of other women and girls have fallen in love with their own hair and we have loved the many hairstyles Solange showcases.
3. #WeddingGoals
After hearing about her divorce from her first husband and father of her child, many Solange fans were happy to find out the songstress had fallen in love again. This time, it was with music video director, Alan Ferguson. When the pictures of her wedding day were released, the world had major envy as we saw a glimpse of Solange's wedding party. The women were dressed in all white, and featured familiar faces like Janelle Monae and of course big sister Beyonce. In that moment, Solange and Alan were true, #WeddingGoals. Not to be outdone by her bridesmaids, it was her jumpsuit that made the biggest impact. For her reception, Solange wore an all white jumpsuit with a deep v neckline, which symbolized the return of the jumpsuit.
4. Style
Wedding attire aside, Solange has always had her own individual sense of style. No matter what she would wear, she would put her own spin on it and make it her own. While, some fashion critics might say she takes it too far and calls her sense, weird or strange, it is comforting to see someone not walking around in six-inch heels on their way to the grocery store. Michael Kors apparently thought so too, because he recently named Solange as the face of his street style campaign which launched earlier this year.
5. Music
Being the little sister of a superstar must be hard, especially when you both enjoy the same profession. Solange's sound is different than her sister's. Beyonce is more of a pop-R&B, while Solange has changed her sound and isn't afraid to experiment with different genre's of music. Just recently, Solange released her new album, "A Seat At The Table". The 21 track was released digitally with little promotion by the singer. I haven't listened to the entire album, yet but I can't wait to hear what it sounds like.
