Ever since I graduated high school, I have felt liberated. I am no longer confined to a small classroom with a teacher who treats me like a child. Although I didn't have a normal high school experience (I had most of my classes at college) I was there long enough to suffer the effects that high school brought. I did enjoy high school and all the perks like spirit week or seeing my friends everyday, but there were things about high school I do not miss.

1. I don't miss the drama.

Let's be real. The real way to spell high school is D-R-A-M-A. Everyone had it, and if you didn't have it, you were involved some how. Rumors were the worst, some people found out their friends aren't really true until they got out of high school. As students we also found out there is no way to escape it. There will always be people who won't like you, but people act on it way more in high school. I couldn't stand coming into school everyday hearing a new rumor about who hooked up with who, or how the drama club has been in chaos because someone got the lead due to being like over someone who actually deserved it.

2. I don't miss the teachers.

Alright let me take that back, I don't miss all the teachers. Actually I had the best English teachers my junior and senior year and they actually taught more than just the standard curriculum. (Shout out to Mr. Farr and Mrs. Bronski.) Besides a few, I thought the teachers were just teaching because they got summers off and they were considered an authority. I didn't see many teachers who had a passion to teach. This was sad because I liked school (most of the time) and I felt like my teachers didn't.

3. Waking up early.

Enough said.

4. Goodbye whole-wheat pizza, hello Chipotle

Cafeteria food was beyond awful. Of course I didn't expect filet mignon, but come on, half-cooked chicken patties and cold curly fries? Halfway through high school, all lunches switched to whole-wheat and gluten-free and even the cookies turned healthy. (Thanks Obama.)

5. You are free to be whoever you want post high school.

Because everyone and everything was labeled in high school, it was hard for people to be themselves. This often caused tensions between friends and people not following their passions because they were embarrassed or scared they wouldn't fit in. In college there are no cliques, and no one cares who you are. College is a great experience and it is a time to find your true self, and your passion while everyone is rooting for you.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
