5 Reasons Why I Love Kappa Phi

After a full year of college life, I decided to get out of my comfort zone and register for spring rush. I was altogether nervous and excited to potentially be a part of a sorority, but about a week before welcome night, I suddenly did not want to be a part of it. After much prayer and thought, I decided that Greek life was just not for me. I felt like the majority of this way of life and group of people did not fit well with my personality. Still, I desired to apart of something bigger––to find my niche. Finally, after a year of waiting, God opened up a door for me––the opportunity to become a part of a Christian sisterhood, Kappa Phi. It is a club that makes Christ the center of everything they do from bible studies, community service and worship nights. While mirroring many of the same Greek traditions such as Big/Little Reveal, tailgating and socials, the club seemed like exactly what I was looking for. And, oh, was I right. Here are just a few reasons why my college life has been forever changed by Kappa Phi:

1. It has given me a sense of unity in my spiritual life.

Finding a church while balancing a social life, classes and work was such a struggle for me. Not only do my sisters encourage my walk with Christ, but they strengthen it by attending church with me. One of the many traditions of this sisterhood is a day of worship called "Kappa Phi Sunday." The day is filled with Jesus praising, yummy food and many laughs.

2. My sisters keep me accountable as a woman of God.

With social media consuming many of our lives on a daily basis, my faith can be shaken in a variety of ways from just trying to fit in with the perfect selfie, to knowing when to stay silent in a time of immaturity. My sisters keep me grounded with love and let me know when I have crossed the line.

3. It has challenged me as a follower of Christ.

It might be a cliché', but the statement rings true: I have to walk the walk if I'm going to talk the talk.

I can't sit in the caf and gossip about the latest drama just to turn around and go to a bible study where I'm a leader who holds an office in the club. This sisterhood has continually strengthened my faith, showing me that if I am willing to be a leader in this club, then I am also a leader on campus as a follower of Christ.

4. It has made me feel like I am a part of something bigger than myself.

Not only do we have a ton of fun praising Jesus, but we serve God by serving others. Kappa Phi is built on sisterhood, study, worship and service. All across the nation, different chapters of Kappa Phi serve their community in a variety of ways throughout the school year.

5. We are "sisters in Christ and sisters for life."

Kappa Phi has given not only given me countless memories, laughs and joy, but it has opened up my eyes as a kingdom worker and woman of God. This club continues to bring joy to my life, and I cannot wait to see all of the joy it brings to other college women wanting something more in their life and in their faith.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
