5 Reasons Why Local Artists Are Important To Your Community
Kendall Doub

Art is a universal piece of everyone’s puzzle, whether it is paintings, poetry, music or dance. Its many forms and purposes have the power to bring communities together, in a way that nothing else can.

1) Takes a village

For local artists, climbing the ladder of success can be daunting and at times, seem impossible. At these times, artists choose to lean on the genuine, enthusiastic support from the community. A creator’s success is about more than having “fans;” it is about having your very own community back you and genuinely want success for them.

To the community, having someone to get behind and support creates a unique atmosphere among the audience- one they can all bond over. That intimate community accomplishes more than direct support for artists.

Firstly, this foundation will bring the community together over something everyone loves. For those involved, this shared interest will foster a fun environment to share with people who share mutual excitement and create a space in which community pride can grow.

Secondly, as more people join the audience and more connections are made, the artist will gain more success, therefore encouraging other to pursue their dreams, and in turn, stimulate the town’s creativity and sense of community. This system benefits both parties!

2) Competition is key

For any artist, competition is motivation to push forward with new and improved ideas. Competition causes the market itself to continue to grow and at the same time fosters an environment for customers and participants to have the best experience possible.

For artists, competition forces them to think creatively and find new ways of connecting with their audience. Any artist will tell you that they are nothing without the people who support what they do, whether financially or socially. Having a community, even a small one, to back up a local creator will mean the word to them and force them to strive to succeed and deliver the best possible experience.

3) Giving back to your hometown

Artists like rapper J.Cole are known for giving back to their hometowns. J-Cole, originally from Fayetteville, N.C., has made it a point to return to his birthplace and give back to his community. In 2011, J. Cole started a school supply giveaway to ensure that kids had everything they need to take advantage of their educations. On the cover of his 2015 album, his childhood home was featured- now functioning as a rent-free home for single mothers. The people of Fayetteville's lives have been forever changed and improved by J.Cole’s donations and continued attention to his city.

4) Points of interest

Art is a universal language open for interpretation. It crosses boundaries of language and culture. Public art adds a fun quirk to any environment. The addition of intriguing murals or locally owned art galleries adds a uniquely welcoming atmosphere to any city. Many towns host art festivals or music festivals to attract people to their home. These types of events bring diverse groups of people and revenue.

5) Economic value

Hosting events such as these will bring a lot of money into the pocket of the city. This stimulates the local economy in ways that are sustainable and continue to attract audiences. More families will also be more attracted to these events and be less likely to relocate to other towns.

Help your local artists in any way you can, whether by donating, purchasing pieces, finding facilities or just showing up to shows or galleries. Support can go a long way for artists and for your hometown. Next time you see your classmate doodling in art class or hear about a poetry reading at a local coffeehouse, do all you can to support those endeavors.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever.
