5 Reasons Why I Like School

School doesn't have to be that bad... or does it?

5 Reasons Why I Like School

Since school is just around the corner for me, or has started for some of my friends already, I decided to write an article about reasons I like school.

I'm going to become a junior in high school this year, and so I like to think I have a year or two of high school experience under my belt. My two past years haven't gone as planned, for anyone surrounding me, and especially me. But that's the fun of high school; Expect the unexpected. So let's get down to business, with the five reasons on why I like school.

1. Friends

Now this has a little bit of a back story to this and I'll later explain in another article, but let's just say I had a really tough time freshman year. When we get back to school, we always think that the new clothes we bought, the expensive shoes, or 'new year, fresh start' crap, will bump up our status in high school. When it really doesn't. In two weeks time, you might see some kids with the same new Yeezy's or new iPhone you bought this summer. Which leaves you with nothing to brag about until your birthday or (depending on your religion, mine is Catholicism, so that is why I used this holiday) Christmas. With nothing to brag about, even if you are popular, you'll want to talk about it with someone, and if you don't have a therapist, then it leaves you with your closest friends.

And your closest friends will always be with you during times of difficulty, (this doesn't mean that you can't potentially change your closest friends) whether it be just an 'off' day, or someone in your family died. They will always be there. Which is why going to school with friends, is the greatest thing ever!

2. House C

I go to a public high school in the state of Massachusetts, and public and private are slightly to very different. But we do have one thing in common, which is: Guidance Counselors.

How you determine your guidance counselor is not really up to you, you get assigned in the summer of the start of your 8th grade- freshman year of school. I got assigned a house that didn't fit my potential, so in October of 2014 I was changed to House C. The Houses go as followed: C, R, L, and S, and you are placed in a house where your assigned guidance counselors, psychologists, Deans of Curriculum, and it's also where you'll get your high school advice for the next four years. AND I've met so many wonderful people in House C. They're so understanding and welcoming, and I just love them. Which is why I like to go back to school, because they make sure I am comfortable and adapted in my classes and I can have actual conversations with them, without being 'talked down' negatively.

3. Mindfulness

Mindfulness. I have a lot of it, and usually happens to me when I'm avoiding something. But when I'm not avoiding and I'm not on electronics, I love to be at peace, and I color, or I walk around my community, or I just look at my window while listening to Delilah (the radio station). During school I forget, but then all the sudden, I see the different faces, clothes, shoes, backpacks, and even smiles. I love it. But I'm not very pleased about it because when they stare back at me, which is rare, I hate it. I'm so embarrassed. So that is why I like to bike, with my friends, but my friends think I'm stupid and say "this isn't a scenic route, Maggie." And I say " Scenic routes are created on what you think is beautiful natural scenery, and so these trees we are passing, are they not beautiful, the way the leaves twirl when the wind hits them, or when they sway back and forth, just naturally." Of course I don't say it like that, but something along those lines are true.

4. School Events

One of my school events is the pep rally to begin the year!

They have dunking contests, tug-a-rope, rap battles, dance battles, cotton candy machines, hula hoop contests, potato sack races and corn hole game (bean bag toss)

And as I say this, I'm thinking that we live in the country, but I swear on my life, we live in a metropolitan area. There are other school events like football and basketball, which my school is slightly big on. The football games are usually very upbeat and comfortable to surround yourself with different crowds. Basketball, is another huge one, my school won the championship on my birthday at a Springfield, MA arena. And these school events that happen, make students closer to each other which I love!

I like my school just by itself and at times of doubt, I usually look back at the events and think to myself, "This school isn't so bad."

5. Teachers

I love teachers, and I actually plan to be a teacher, one day. I credit their work, because most of them deal with over 100+ kids a day, and half of them may have attitude, and a lot of it. Some kids treat their teachers with disrespect, but I'm in the majority with treating them nicely. They make me like school and accomplishing assignments because of their positive attitude.

Those are a few reasons why I like school. School shouldn't just be social life vs. work life, it should be those two combined and maybe some other accomplishments on the side. Plus school should be a safe zone for you to be comfortable in, and confident. School is only just a few years of your life, the rest is work, and you should get the best out of your education at school because it will eventually stop.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!

There is nothing quite like family.

Family is kinda like that one ex that you always find yourself running back to (except without all the regret and the angsty breakup texts that come along with it).

No matter how long your class is, there's always time for the mind to wander. Much like taking a shower or trying to fall asleep, sitting in a classroom can be a time when you get some of your best ideas. But, more than likely, you're probably just trying to mentally cope with listening to a boring lecturer drone on and on. Perhaps some of the following Aristotle-esque thoughts have popped into your head during class.

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.

We're in college, none of us actually have anything together. In fact, not having anything together is one of our biggest stressors. However, there's a few little things that we do ever so often that actually make us feel like we have our lives together.

1. Making yourself dinner

And no this does not include ramen or Annie's Mac & Cheese. Making a decent meal for yourself is one of the most adult things you can do living on campus. And the food is much better than it would be at the dining hall.
