5 Reasons Why I Grew To Love Miniature Dachshunds

If you have never had a miniature dachshund, I would highly recommend getting one.

For over three years now, I have had the pleasure of having two miniature dachshunds. It was not until recently, that I have really grown to appreciate them for the type of dogs that they are and the unique ways that they bring. They are great dogs and great pets and I will share with you five reasons why I grew to love them so much.

1. They sleep all day

This may not sound great, however I have grown to love it and appreciate it very much. Being a student and a person that loves to nap and chill as long and as frequent as possible, it is very nice to know that your miniature dachshunds will sleep and chill all day with you. It is almost as if sleeping all day is their way of taking them on walks and giving them exercise.

2. They are very loyal

Loyalty is a very important trait that I value, not only in dogs, but in everyday life. With miniature dachshunds being so loyal to their owners, it makes me love them even more. They do not open up very easy to strangers and they are almost always with their owners in public settings. If you can get over their "hardheadedness," they listen very well which shows them to be even more loyal.

3. They bark at everything

Yes, even though hearing dogs bark a lot of the day can be annoying, I have learned to love and appreciate them for it. I realized that they bark at everything because they are protective of their loved-ones and of their home, so when they see anyone walk past or come near their home they bark like crazy. This will be especially good if someone ever tried to come on your house unwanted, because they hear everything and would bark and warn their owners right away.

4. They are adorable

I think that there looks are what get people interested in them from the very beginning. Their big floppy ears, with their small size, and their body shape allows them to be some of the most cutest dogs on the planet. You may not value cute dogs, but it comes in handy in many situations. When they are sleeping next to you, no one wants to stare at something horrendous looking. When your out with them taking them on walks, a lot of people want to meet them and pet them because they are so cute. Who doesn't love adorable things?

5. They don't take up much space

With me being a student and being on the move all of the time, their size comes in great. When I move from house to house, they can easily fit in the car and don't take up much space leaving a lot of space for other things to be moved. Their size also allows landlords to be more accepting of them. Their medical bills seem to be less than those of other dogs because of their small size which is also a plus.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
