Five Reasons Why Wearing Black Brightens My Soul

We all have that one friend that puts a very literal meaning on having a streamlined wardrobe. While they totally don’t mind that you are rocking your neon sorority bro–tank or Lilly Pulitzer dress to class, you definitely have some issues with their head-to-toe black ensemble. Fear no more, because I am here to enlighten all of the naysayers on why black does some decency for the soul!

1. It’s slimming:

If you are looking to shave off a few pounds without actually shaving off a few pounds, black is the color for you! There’s nothing like a trendy black ensemble to show off that figure. Some might fear that all black clothing can blend together, but if you throw in different textures and shades, the look can still be interesting. Think a nice leather jacket or a sleek pair of dress pants.

2. It matches with literally everything:

Forget sifting through your closet to miraculously find a sweater to match that purple top. Let me say from experience that black on black on black always matches and is always chic. No doubts whatsoever. I promise. You could probably go to your closet and pick out your OOTD with your eyes closed and still know that everything would look great together! Now that’s some true all-black dedication.

3. It’s badass:

You are lying if you put on all black and don’t want to strut down those hallways all the way to class. You know it’s true! It makes you feel fierce for any casual or nighttime event. It’s always appropriate when necessary, but the best part about it is it can be made edgy or classic. So many different styles of dressing can come out of this one perfect color!

4. It transitions easily:

If I can rock an outfit to class, but also go to an evening event in the same look minus the flats and plus the heels, we have a winner. Nine times out of ten… just kidding, ten times out of ten, this method works with all black ensembles! Most of the time black clothing already looks a little dressed up, so if you throw off your work blazer and accessorize well, you have a very functional versatile closet, my friend.

5. It makes you look mature:

Something about wearing all black makes a person look put together and mature. Of course, there are exceptions to these cases, but for the most part, these people look like they are ready to own that day. If you’ve ever worked in a big city, you know that black is the flavor of the day every day when people get dressed for work.

I hope this sheds some light on the mindset of my fellow supporters of the all-black wardrobe movement! We aren’t saying you have to ONLY wear black all the time. Maybe throw in some whites and grays to mix it up. See, we can do variety too!

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
