I wish someone had sat me down and said “No matter how great the company or position is, you will always find something you hate about your job." I mean that is straighter forward than the idea of agreeing to disagree and keeping your job. Maybe someone did mention this, either I wasn't listening or they weren't speaking loud enough. Either way your job sucks for one reason or another and it is beyond the people you work with.
I am two years post-grad and I have had the chance to hold a few positions (we'll call them testers). Some were great and others suck completely and probably should be shut down due to building code violations as well as unfit employees. But what’s HR these days, I mean, if the chain and wheels are still rolling on the bike, who needs a seat?
At one time or another you personally thought to yourself how horrible your job is except you weren't eager to quit as you needed the money. Other times you knew you hated the facility and people but you loved what you do. Then there is that thin line that wakes up and head to the place they hate to be grumpy towards everyone. Whoever you are on the scale, you agree there are five reoccurring reasons your job sucks!
1. Work starts too early:
The saying has always been “9-5” yet for most jobs you begin at 8 a.m. and stay until 5 p.m. It is that either most jobs didn’t get the memo or that was false advertisement all these years. Either way, I think you would see more smiling faces if the work day began at 9-9:30.
2. You're overworked:
It may be just me but the last few jobs I have held consisted of me doing a lot more than listed in the job description. What I find most baffling about this is, you could be being terminated for not keeping up and doing your job but companies are able to pile work after work, outside of your general duties, without raising the pay or title? I think they’ve taken the saying “above and beyond” a little too far. I personally believe those who go above and beyond are doing so to be recognized as well as increasing their skills within the position so that they too, like the boss, can hold a higher title as well.
3. Pay rate:
The cost of living is ridiculous and who is running the budget and came up with the ratio that rent should be $800 a month yet most jobs are paying $12 or less? Point me to that person; we need to have several seats and talk. I, myself have always held at least two jobs (currently only one) due to the fact expenses are high and slave working isn’t enough. Having an additional job helps to keep extra money in the wallet and always a plus when unexpected expenses occur. What I did notice is, it hinders a person from using their energy to do the things they truly enjoy all because they have spent most of their 24 hours building someone else brand and when it comes time to work on their own talents or business, they are too exhausted.
4. Conditions:
Too often than normal I have worked in an environment that I am sure is not up to safety and building codes. I recently worked for a local radio station and the building maintenance was horrible. Every time it rained, the basement flooded where the “break room” was located would flood. The ceiling had missing tiles, the equipment (which was used daily) was dusty and if you
5. Unhappy/Unsatisfied:
If your only reason for being at your job is because you need the money, begin looking for something more perpetual. If you are anything like me, holding a position is more than just doing the work and getting paid, we need benefits and a great environment. As an adult we make sacrifices and regularly when it comes to our place of employment all because we are trying to stay afloat in the world. What I have noticed, what separates me and others like me from those who are okay with work-pay-no-gains routine, is the assets we walk away with. When I am job hunting and going on interviews I always consider how the position will enhance my skills as well as future job placement,"What will I gain from this company/industry". Not often enough are companies thinking of you in the same view and to some you are just another name on payroll for the time being.
For what it is worth, it would be so simple to demise our feelings and simply deal with it.Right Boss? NO, that will never be the simple solution. While labor laws are making public attempts to accommodate, it is up to the employees to advocate those rights and force those higher to enforce them!. The next time you apply for a position be sure it is the position you want, once you are offered the position, ask for what you want and demand what you are entitled to! Oh and ask to take a look around the building, including the restroom lol. After all, this is where you will spend most of your days.
