As many of us know, the original show, "Boy Meets World," recently got a modern spin-off called "Girl Meets World." When I first heard of the show, I didn't really pay too much attention to it. But, then I started to see article and reasons to start watching it, which pushed me to start the show. I started officially watching it two seasons into the show, but I instantly fell in love wit the cast and quality of the show. "Girl Meets World" revisits some of the best moments in "Boy Meets World," but with a new twist! With Cory and Topanga being the parent figures, we see the next generation through their kids, Riley and Auggie. The most important factors are the life lessons that come with "Girl Meets World." I will admit, there are times when the show resonates so much with me and I tear up. "Girl Meets World" has a long way to go and I am more than sure that the creators will do the show justice. So if you don't believe me just yet, here are 5 reasons to love this show from the start.
1. Anyone can watch this show, and understand with different perspectives
I feel comfortable enough to know that any kid could be watching this at home, but also adults. In an age where television is starting to be poorly written, it is refreshing to find a show with some wittiness and spunk to it.
2. Letting Riley Matthews be her own character
When I was first starting the show I was intrigued to find out how Cory and Topanga's daughter story would unfold. Riley had a lot to live up to, because Cory and Topanga where some of the most iconic characters. But regardless of the show, reminiscing about "Boy Meets World," this isn't their story anymore. It's Riley's and her friends. There is even a specific episode called "Girl Meets Cory and Topanga" to emphasize Riley's uniqueness. She is a character with immense detail and quirks.
3. Addressing hard issues like cyber-bullying, autism, and insecurity.
The show even tackles some of the most hard-hitting problems. The writers of the show want to give their audience the actual world and not this make believe place where nothing bad can happen. In the episode "Girl Meets Rileytown," even though Riley Matthews is filled with a grand amount of positivity, she faces cyber-bullying. Also, because she is the type of person who wants to help others, even if she can't help herself; you can feel how much the bully influences Riley. This was a big moment for the show like another episode called "Girl Meets Farkle," where one of Riley's friend has the chance of having autism. Regardless of this life-changing moment Riley, Maya, and Lucas stay by Farkle's side to support him any way they can.
4. The "Boy Meets World" references and familiar faces
Since this show is a spin-off of "Boy Meets World," some of Cory's old friends come back to show their faces again. We see them in a new light and what affected them the most when they were younger. In the episode, "Girl Meets Hurricane," Shawn's old fling, Angela, returns and tells him the reason why she ended up leaving him. Angela and Shawn realize what happened between them finally makes sense in the present, and Shawn grows up and takes the advice from Angela to find someone.
5. Cory Matthews being the new Mr. Feeny
Just like Mr. Feeny staying with the same cast all through college, Cory has so far been their teacher in middle school. He is a history teacher who teaches more than just the history lesson of the day, he teaches them about life. The show does this funny thing about breaking the fourth wall and other students in the class will comment about how the world does not revolve around his daughter. Cory is a remarkable character is this new series because he is teaching everything he once learned from Mr. Feeny to a group of students he believes will impact change into the world.
So next time you have any free time and don't know what to watch on Netflix or television give "Girl Meets World" a chance. There are certainly more reasons than the ones I gave. The show has exceeded my expectations for just any other Disney Channel show.
