If you have watched "The Office" and "Parks and Recreation" as many times as I have (it's a lot, I watch a lot of T.V) and are looking for a new a sitcom to binge on, I have the answer my friend- "Brooklyn 99." I stumbled upon this show about a year ago, and then I proceeded to watch the available four seasons in a time span of a week. Am I proud of this accomplishment? You betcha. "Brooklyn 99" is wildly underrated, and it's arguably one of the funniest shows on T.V., so without any further ado here are 7 reasons you should start watching "Brooklyn 99."
1. Character Growth
Andy Samberg stars as Jake Peralta, a childish yet talented detective of Brooklyn's 99th precinct. As the show goes on, Jake sheds his anti-rule persona and becomes a more mature but still hilarious detective. Andy Samber is genuinely amazing on this show and even got me saying "Cool cool cool" on the daily.
2. LGTBQ Representation.
Representation is important, and "Brooklyn 99" knows it. Ray Holt a gay, African-American man becomes the newly appointed captain of the precinct. Now think, how many times on do we a homosexual black man in a position of power? The answer is not enough. This show doesn't make Captain Holt as a token character instead it portrays him as a loveable three-dimensional character who becomes the moral guide of the detectives in the 99. Also (possible spoiler alert) one of the detectives comes out as bisexual in the fifth season and does a beautiful job fighting the false belief that bisexuality isn't a real sexual preference.
3. There are actually normal couples.
Okay but seriously, most T.V shows survive mostly of their will they, will they not storylines (cough cough, "FRIENDS") but the 99 actually shows a couple in a healthy and loving relationship. Shoker! This might seem like a weird thing to be hyped up about, but this summer I cheered on an incestual relationship between aunt and nephew on Game of Thrones, so a normal relationship is very needed.
4. The 99 is woke.
2017 is the year of being woke, and "Brooklyn 99" is the perfect outlet for it. Lieutenant Terry is a man who is 200 pounds of muscle, draws and loves yogurt, once again fighting the stereotypes placed on not only men but women as well (Rosa is a TOTAL badass). There is a lot more I could say about how culturally aware this show is, but then I would end up writing a five-page paper so I'll save you the trouble and I'll just say this-trust me.
5. Most importantly, it's hilarious.
Seriously, this show is REALLY funny. With screenwriters such as Daniel J. Goor and Michael Schur (some of the comic talent responsible for "The Office" and "Parks and Rec"), this show is a hilarious take on the overly used police show format that drips with charm and fantastic dialogue. The 99 is not only great because of it's writing but also because the actors in this show have such authentic chemistry, you would think they were all lifelong friends.
I watch a lot of television, seriously it's a lot, some consider it concerning, I like to see it as a talent that provides me the opportunity to force others to watch the shows I think are good. "Brooklyn 99" is a must watch- trust me, I'm a television aficionado.
NINE-NINE!
