5 Reasons Why UMass Belly Dance Club Is One Of The Best Clubs

  1. There's no judgement

When I first walked into my first meeting, I was nervous that everyone would have more experience dancing, already be friends, and that I'd blend into the background. But that was completely not the case. Everyone there welcomed me with open arms and really made it feel like a comfortable and safe environment. Everyone of all experience levels were welcome and you weren't forced to do anything you didn't feel comfortable with. Being a part of the club, allowed me to embrace my body and really learn to love myself for who I am.

2. Performing Gives You The Biggest Self Confidence Boost

Before you go on for a performance, especially you're first one, you get butterflies in you're stomach, feel like you forgot the whole dance, and are terrified you're going to do something wrong. But after you perform, you feel so proud of yourself because not only did you remember everything, but you also had a killer performance. You feel like you're on top of the world and you discover a new found pride for not only yourself, but also, your fellow dancers. Because everyone's so supportive, they really allow that self confidence boost to come through, especially when you need it most.

3. The Board Members Are There To Help You

In a lot of different clubs, the board members are seen as authority figures and are even somewhat intimidating. For belly dancing, they are the people that want you to succeed. They make sure they're available to you whenever you may need help with something or even if you just want to talk about the club. They go out of their way to make sure you feel comfortable with the dance, so you can be the best dancer you can be. They are extremely talented, and people to look up to.

4. There Are Chances For You To Go Solo

Besides a group dance, every member of the club has the ability to either make up their own choreography, or get help making their own choreography to perform a solo. This allows you personally to shine and reassures you of just how far you can go. There's nothing better than performing a solo, having an amazing performance, and then hearing all your team members cheer for you and congratulate you. Again, it really helps your self confidence to see where you came from and where you are now.

5. The Club Is A Family

From all different backgrounds, from all across campus, from all different walks of life, Umass Belly Dance Club comes together and unites as a family. When we're not performing, or at practice, we invite each other to do things, like grab dinner at Berk. We have bonding events that bring us together and allow you to meet people you may not have gotten the chance to talk to before. You see the people in the club all across campus and everyone always says hello with a smile on their face to one another. I know for me, I always feel most comfortable when I'm around the people in UBDC because I know they accept me for who I am.

PS: The costumes are pretty awesome too!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
