I used to be a dog person. Cats were never a desired pet of mine, not like dogs were anyways.
I always grew up with dogs and cats, but our cats were always indoor-outdoor, coming and leaving from the house as they pleased. However, after I went to college and got my own cat (the only pet I was allowed in my apartment), I changed my mind and here's why:
1. Low Maintenance
Cats are the perfect pets for low key or introverted people. They never need to be taken out for walks or let outside, like dogs. They're able to roam around the house as they please, unlike most exotic pets stuck in cages. They enjoy their alone time, they don't need constant attention, and they are able to find ways to amuse themselves. It's purrfect.
2. They Only Meow When They Need Something From You
Cats don't verbally communicate with other cats. They never meow when they see another cat or critters running around outside, or when the mailman comes to the door. Unless you have other species of pets in the house, your cat will only meow when it wants something from you. Whether that be food, attention, or to get out of a room is up for you to interpret.
3. Purring
A cat's purr is one of the most soothing sounds. It's therapeutic not only for humans (by reliving stress and lowering blood pressure), but also for a cat's well-being. According to Elizabeth von Muggenthaler, a bioacoustics researcher, purring can lead to bone growth, pain relief and wound healing in felines.
4. They are the Best Cuddlers
Since cats are generally smaller animals, it's easy for them to curl up next to you in bed, whether that be at the foot of your mattress, between your legs, or right next to your face. They will help keep you warm at night without taking up too much space.
5. When a Cat Likes You, You're Special
Dogs love anyone who gives them attention; however, cats don't. So when a cat shows you affection, it means that you're special. Cats own you just as much as you own them, and doesn't that make the bond even better?
While I still love dogs, my cat Ike is the greatest pet I could ever ask for.
