Walking through the quad I look around and I feel at home. My school offers so many resources and I know that if I ever needed anything at all, I have a place to go.
At most large colleges, your professors don’t even know your name and you’re lucky if they recognize you. I’ve heard stories from my friends who decided they didn’t want to go to class for weeks, but it didn’t matter because attendance wasn’t taken in their classes. As long as they showed up for the exam they were in the clear. Here at my small liberal arts college, my professors want me to succeed on a more personal level. For many, we’re on a first name basis and I know that I could ask them anything at all. Being more than just a number and having an honest relationship with my professor is important and we’re really lucky to have that here.
No matter where I live on campus, chances are I’m not too far away from my friends. One of the perks to living on a small campus is that we can all live together if we want to. My best friends live right next door or only a two-minute walk to the next dorm.
If you go to a small school, you’ll probably agree that it’s almost impossible to be involved in just one group, club, or organization on campus. In fact, if you’re like me, you most likely have a difficult time naming every single thing that you’re involved in. Getting involved in a club or organization is an important resume builder and my small school offers so many opportunities to get involved.
Waking up at 7:50 a.m. for my 8 a.m. class is a real thing and it has definitely been done far too often. Living on a campus that is small and compact has so many benefits, especially when it comes to my sleeping and eating schedule. It’s nice knowing that lunch, dinner, or a late-night snack are only a three-minute walk away.
Even though my walk to class is short, I see so many smiling faces along the way. The environment at my school is made up of so many diverse and unique people who are all proud of where they attend school. Most importantly, everyone is always so friendly and easy to talk to. Although there aren't many people whose names I don't know, I always find a way to meet someone new every day.
Deciding to go to a small school took a lot of thinking, but I am extremely glad that I did. The opportunities here are endless, my friends are close and the food is closer. If I could go back and do it again, I'd still choose the homey atmosphere of my small town school and I am extremely proud of that.
