If someone says the name Stefani Germanotta, you'd probably have no idea who they are talking about. Most know Stefani as Lady Gaga, the iconic singer best known for her outrageous sense of style and her catchy tunes. Lady Gaga's quirkiness sometimes overshadows her talent. Her name has sometimes been met with a wrinkle of the nose and an "Ugh, she is so bizarre." Also, while her songs might be great, they are overplayed. I mean, one can only stand to hear “Bad Romance”so many times before wanting to rip all the hair out of one's head, right?
Many have criticized her strange sense of style, getting a little turned off by the meat dress she wore to the 2010 MTV Music Video Awards, or most of the other strange, ugly and sometimes downright creepy outfits she's sported over the years. But lately it seems like Lady Gaga has re-branded herself, and the new LG is pretty cool. It seems like there's much more to her than just her strange wigs and quirky costumes. Here are five reasons to re-evaluate your view of her and become a fan:
1. Lady Gaga won a Golden Globe for her role in America Horror Story: Hotel
Her performance as "The Countess" is pretty commendable, especially considering she is primarily known as a pop singer. Some may not know it, but Lady Gaga is no stranger to the arts. She was involved in many theater productions in her college years, and was trained in musical theater at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. She even had a small role on The Sopranos in 2001!
2. She's a major philanthropist and activist
Lady Gaga has contributed to various charities. She donated money to help Haiti after the earthquake and donated $1 million to the American Red Cross to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy. You go, Lady Gaga!
3. She's practically related to Elton John
Elton John and his husband David Furnish designated Lady Gaga godmother to their son Zachary, and later, to their new baby Elijah as well!
4. She did a stellar job singing the national anthem at the super bowl
Lady Gaga really honored the land of the free and the home of the brave in her powerful performance this past Sunday at the 50th Super Bowl game! She reminded us of her incredible vocal talent while staying cool and confident as she performed in front of more than 114 million viewers.
5. Her songs are admittedly pretty awesome
No matter how overplayed. C'mon, you gotta admit that you would still sing along to her song "Telephone" even though by now you've heard it about a trillion times since it came out in 2010!
You keep doing you, Lady Gaga!
