Recently, I have decided to transfer from a 4-year institution to a community college, where I will be receiving my associates degree. Over the years, society has become more acceptable of the community college route. However, there are still many that detest it. This shouldn't be the case. Going to a community college for two years then transferring to a 4-year institution is a great idea, and here's why!
1) Money
According to many studies, the average 2015 college graduate has a student loan debt of $30,100. As one can depict from this, attending a 4-year institution is not cheap, especially if its private or out-of-state. For instance, I will be saving about $32,000 over the span of two years by attending my local community college.
2) Guaranteed Admissions
In many states, community colleges have agreements with state colleges/universities, where if you meet certain requirements, then you are guaranteed admission into that school. For example, the Virginia Community College System has agreements with state schools such as VCU, UVA, William and Mary, etc.
3) Soul Searching
If you plan on transferring to a 4-year institution after community college, then you will have more time to figure yourself out. Most of the classes you will be taking will be general education requirements, so this will enable you to have more time to ponder your potential career opportunities.
4) Flexible Class Schedule
Many community colleges offer online courses for their students. This offers great flexibility for all, especially those that are working jobs, while being a part-time student. Also, many offer classes in the evening, and some even offer classes on the weekend.
5) More Attention
Community colleges are often smaller than the state's college/university, allowing more one-on-one help from professors. This enables students to build close relationships with their professors and receive help on assignments when needed.
These are some of the reasons why attending community college is a wonderful idea. Don't let the stigma of attending one stop you!
