If you are from Savannah, then there is no doubt you have said “I can’t wait to leave here,” or something along those lines at least once or twice in your life. I am guilty of doing so as well, but if you've left home and gone to college yet, even if it's only 45 minutes away, there is no doubt you've also said, “I miss Savannah.” Once you meet people from cities all over Georgia, and sometimes even different states, you realize how much you took Savannah for granted. Here are five reasons why there is no place like Savannah:
1. You realize what great food Savannah has.
A place without Spanky’s is a place I can’t stay forever.
2. You realize it is a privilege to know or have heard of majority of the people.
Your college friends can’t believe that you know groups of people that are from Savannah, but did not go to the same school as you. They can’t wrap their heads around the fact and you can’t really explain the fact that you simply just know everyone somehow.
3. Even though we think there is nothing to do, other places have it worse.
People from Savannah constantly complain how we have nothing to do and no where to go with our friends, and while that is sometimes true, we do have options that other people don’t. Tybee might not be the nicest beach, but it is a beach and it is only 15-20 minutes away. Downtown is so unique with huge parks, shopping and food you cannot beat.
4. You realize how truly beautiful Savannah is.
Whenever you go into downtown after your long drive on i16, you see the streets, shops, restaurants and trees in a whole different light. This is a beautiful place and it is your home.
5. You realize how popular Savannah is.
Majority of the time, you have never heard of the places people are from in college. They usually give up trying to explain and classify their home in the Atlanta area, but everyone knows Savannah and is jealous when you tell them that's where you're from.
There are many more reasons why there really is no place like Savannah, but I feel like these are some main ones. Of course there are times when we are truly tired of the city and sometimes the people there, but that is what’s nice about going away for college. You get to spend some time away, but it makes you appreciate the moments spent back home. If you're not in college yet, I'm sure you are convinced that you will not miss it once you leave, but I promise you will. And once that time comes, you will be forever grateful that Savannah is where you get to come back to.
