In terms of musicals, there are really only a few in recent history that have become truly famous. Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, and the Book of Mormon just to name a few. However, there is one that I think hasn't quite gotten the credit it deserves. That musical is the new Spongebob Squarepants Musical that debuted on Broadway at the end of 2017 with minimal fanfare.
Now, hearing that alone might turn you off. "A Spongebob musical? You have got to be kidding me." But no I say to you. NO!! This is one of the best musicals I have listened to since Hamilton. That's correct, Hamilton.
So, to show how much I love it, and to give you reasons as to why you should also love this show, here are the 5 reasons why Spongebob Squarepants the musical was the best thing to happen during 2017.
1. The Music is Written by Tons of Talented People!
All of the songs were written by tons of talented musicians such as Cyndi Lauper, Lady Antebellum, and even Steven Tyler!
2. The Story is Original!
This show isn't just some Spongebob episode with tap dancing and a few belted chords. The story is all original, including the crucial plot points such as a deadly volcano threatening Bikini Bottom, Patrick becoming the leader of a cult, and Patchy the Pirate fighting for pirate rights.
3. The Costumes are Theatric Genius
As seen from the gifs above, the actors don't look like their cartoon counterparts exactly. Instead, the costume designer made the actors have the feel of the characters. However, they do have several theatrical tricks such as Squidward's multiple legs and Plankton and his computer wife, Karen.
4. The show has some pretty relevant points.
For being a show about a talking, walking, (and now) singing sponge, the show has some pretty topical points. The issue of fake news, and distrusting comes up several times during the production. In my opinion, that's pretty bold, and the right move for a 'kids' show.
5. The Show is Just Damn Good.
This show has some of the best new music, talented actors, and messages about friendship and being true to yourself that I've seen in a Broadway musical in years. So do yourself a favor. Go to Spotify, add this to your library, and jam out to the best musical about a sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea!
