The wonderful world of Disney is full of timeless classics, most old and some new. I have never known a soul who disliked Disney. Disney plays a role in nearly every childhood. From the toys to the books, clothes and costumes, there would be nothing without the movies. Generations constantly argue over the best Disney movie. Out of all these arguments, many people forget about a classic: "The Hunchback of Notre Dame."
Set in 15th century Paris, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" tells the story of the misshapen bell ringer, Quasimodo. After being trapped in the bell tower by his evil master, Judge Frollo, Quasimodo finds the courage to leave his prison. He befriends Esmerelda and Phoebus, and together, the unlikely trio saves Paris from the hands of Frollo.
"The Hunchback" has to be one of the most underappreciated and underrated films ever produced by the Disney company. Without further ado, I present my top five reasons.
1. Esmerelda
It's only right to begin with Esmerelda. In my opinion, she is one of the most beautiful and pure Disney ladies. She is often forgotten because she is not technically a Disney princess. Esmerelda is one of the Disney ladies who stands up for what she believes in. She's independent with a beautiful voice to be heard. As you can see in the picture, she just might have been one of my favorite characters...
2. The Gargoyles
It may have slipped your mind just how hilarious these stooges are. Victor, Hugo and Laverne provide comic relief in such a dark movie. Victor and Hugo's name pay homage to the novel's author, Victor Hugo. These guys provide countless one-liners for the adults. Before Quasimodo ever left the bell tower, the Gargoyles were his dearest friends.
3. Judge Claude Frollo
First of all, ew. He has to be one of Disney's most vile and disgusting villains. He is a villain, but not because of some silly revenge or spell. Even as a supposed godly man, his soul is corrupt. He literally sings into his fireplace about his sexual desires for Esmerelda (sorry children). He is just plain creepy. A brilliant and realistic character, but still creepy.
4. The Music
Two words: Alan Menken. Menken has composed countless famous scores, including "The Little Mermaid," "Aladdin" and "Hercules." His music has enchanted and enriched each and every film he has composed for. Some of the most captivating songs from "Hunchback" like "God Help the Outcasts" and "Hellfire" would not have been possible without the memorable Menken.
5. The Art
Before Disney introduced their 3D animation in the early 2000s, there were masterpieces like such. Each still was beautifully crafted with vibrant detail. Notre Dame itself looks strikingly similar to the cathedral in real life. The detail in the stained glass windows, the architecture and the clothing is immaculate. Sometimes I wish Disney would go back to their old style. *Dramatic sigh*
So there you have it: my top five reasons why "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" is such an underrated movie. Hopefully, we will see this film make a comeback. Do you think I missed anything? Comment below!
