Yes, Thanksgiving Actually IS An Underrated Holiday

Why does everyone skip straight to Christmas right after Halloween? What about the best holiday filled with family and stuffing your face full of food?

Halloween is over and all the stores get ready to fill their aisles with… Christmas decorations? I get it, Christmas is the holiest jolliest time of the year, but what about Thanksgiving? What about autumn leaves and cute cornucopia centerpieces? They deserve to be sold in the seasonal aisle of Target just as much as spooky skeletons and Christmas trees are.

Honestly, Thanksgiving is one of the most underrated holidays of the year. So here are a couple reasons why Thanksgiving needs the recognition it deserves.

1. Fall Weather.

Who doesn’t like watching the leaves fall down every November? The streets are lined with your very own orange and red carpet. Go ahead, make that giant pile of leaves and jump straight into it like you’ve been dying to do since you were a kid. Sure, the weather around Thanksgiving is a bit chilly, but it is the perfect time to pull out that flannel and boots you had tucked away in your closet during the heat of summer. Order that Pumpkin Spice Latte you secretly are obsessed with, embrace the fall spirit.

2. Coming Home.

Hopefully, for Thanksgiving break, you’re able to travel back home. It isn’t as long as winter break, but hey, it’s still a nice time to relax on the couch and catch up with "Stranger Things" before you see all the spoilers over social media. Also, after sleeping on that dorm mattress for so long, it’s so nice to jump right into your old bed again.

3. Thanksgiving Dinner.

I have never met anyone who did not like Thanksgiving dinner. I mean, what’s not to like? You literally have a giant-ass bird stuffed with all the best veggies possible. Mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, dinner rolls, basically all the carbs you can stuff your face with. Not to mention that beautiful pumpkin pie you’ve been eyeing ever since your mom took it out of the oven. So don’t be shy, pour some gravy all over that plate. Slab some cranberry sauce on top while you’re at it; you can work on that fit bod after New Years.

4. Shopping.

Oh, Black Friday, the time everyone loves to hate. Remember the days when Black Friday was actually on Friday? Well, I guess it’s nice getting those deals a little bit earlier (even though I am a bit salty that it cuts into my dinner time). It’s always amusing to see the long lines of people waiting outside Best Buy or Target. Better yet, it’s hilarious to watch people run into the stores like animals. I get it, though; I would want that giant flat screen for half off, too!

5. Family.

College is a time to be free, but it’s always nice to come home and spend some time with the parents again. Hopefully, the siblings come home too and you can have the old gang back together. You all can sit around the table and talk about the hilarious stories you’ve made during college (or maybe not, choose those stories wisely), and reminisce on a simpler time when everyone still lived under the same roof. Thanksgiving is the time to be thankful, especially for the people that have been supporting you since the beginning.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
