If you’re like most Americans, you can’t start your day without having that morning cup of coffee. Waking up for school or work early in the morning is a struggle for almost anyone, and coffee is there to take away your sleepy haze and give you the energy needed to get through the day. Whether it’s in the form of a espresso, latte, cappuccino, or a simple iced coffee from your favorite coffee shop, they all contain that wonderful chemical compound we crave and desire: caffeine.
While I myself love coffee in all forms, there isn’t much going for it besides containing caffeine. There are many alternate beverages that can give you the much needed caffeine to get through the day, as well as providing additional health benefits. The most popular beverage second to coffee is tea. Tea. Yes, that stuff that was dumped in the Boston Harbor in the 1700s. Here are five reasons why you should ditch the bean juice for leaf water.
1. Tea also contains caffeine.
Believe it or not, tea leaves also contain caffeine, in fact they have a higher concentration of caffeine than coffee beans! Once brewed, however, coffee contains more milligrams of caffeine than steeped tea, which is probably why many people find it superior to tea. Nevertheless, you’re still getting caffeine in your system, which can be increased by brewing a stronger cup.
2. Tea has many varieties.
Assam, Irish Breakfast, English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Darjeeling, Matcha, Rooibos, just to name a few. There are plenty of varieties of teas to please anyone’s taste preferences, from lighter green and white teas, to stronger black teas.
3. Tea provides additional health benefits that coffee can’t.
Green tea in particular is full of antioxidants and other nutrients that can help boost your health. In addition, it can help you lose weight by increasing your metabolism and clear your skin.
4. Tea is easier to make than coffee.
All you need to make tea is hot water, tea, and a cup or mug. Simply pour the water into the cup or mug, and put in your tea bag or infuser. That’s it! No need to fumble around with a complicated machine or messy pods in the morning.
5. Tea is a culturally appreciated beverage.
Outside of the United States, tea is the staple beverage over coffee. Many countries across Asia and Europe have a large tea culture, including Japan, China, Korea, India, Turkey, Russia, and Pakistan. Tea is prepared and enjoyed in many different ways across these countries, such as green tea ceremonies in Japan and afternoon tea as an after lunch meal in England. Wherever you go in the world, one thing you can count on is a great cup of tea!
