Why Prague stole my heart

5 Reasons to Study Abroad in Prague

When I was choosing where to study abroad, Prague did not really cross my mind. To be honest, I probably could not even point it out on a map. So why did I choose it? Prague is unlike many other popular study abroad destinations, like Florence, London, Paris, and other typical abroad locations. I wanted the feeling of being in a completely different and unknown culture. At the time of my choosing, I had no idea what language they even spoke here, but for some reason that intrigued me. And just like that, I decided I would be spending a semester in the gem of a city.

Choosing to study abroad was one of the best decisions I have ever made, and what makes it ever better is the amazing city I can now call home. Now that I just poured my heart out to about my love for this city, here are the five best reasons why to pack your bags and spend a semester in Prague.

The Architecture

When walking around Prague, there is not one building that won’t take your breath away. The architecture that went into each building is so unique and the history behind each building is unreal. It is crazy to think that people crafted them by hand. Take Prague Castle for example; it looks like a castle straight out of a fairy tale, overlooking the entire city. Not far from the Castle is the Charles Bridge, possibly the most popular attraction in Prague.

The Beer

One of the first Czech words you will learn is “pivo”, which means beer, of course. The Czech Republic ranks number one out of all other countries in consumption of beer per capita. The beer belly might appear, but it will be worth it because the Czech Republic is known for its good taste and high quality beer, and you need to try as many as possible.

Right in the Heart of Europe

Prague is right in the center of Europe. This makes it very easy and convenient to travel to other cities around Europe, without having to book a flight and go through customs each time. Transportation by bus or train to another country is a breeze because of the central location.

The Czech Koruna

Currently, one Czech Koruna is equal to .04 U.S. dollar. Shopping in Prague should not be a worry because of how inexpensive everything is. A typical beer should be around 25 Czech Koruna or 1 U.S. dollar, compared to the euro that is pretty great. Not having enough money should be the last thing on your mind while in Prague.

Street Food

Everywhere in and around the city you will find vendors selling varieties of delicious foods. A personal favorite of mine is all the renditions of sausage. Spicy, mild, or sweet there is a flavor for everyone. Also at this vendor, unlike American grilled cheese, they offer an ooey gooey fried cheese sandwich. Conveniently, some of these food stands are located right next to the tram stops. So, it’s a perfect snack while waiting for your tram to come. The favorite and possibly most famous street food dessert is the trdelnik, almost equivalent to a churro, this delicious rolled pastry is topped with sugar and walnuts, but to make it even more delicious you can add toppings of Nutella, sweet jam, and even ice cream. They are best when they are fresh and warm because they just melt in your mouth.

I'm serious

There are tons of unisex names that are popular: Taylor, Alex, Bailey, etc. There are also numerous names that are used for both sexes, but they’re not seen as “unisex” yet. People are slowly becoming accustomed to the dual use of these names, but for the most part, in their minds they associate certain names with certain sexes. And that leaves those of us with these names in many awkward situations.

pale girl

Everyone has insecurities, that's just a fact. You didn't ask to be born this way. You didn't ask to inherit the one trait no one else in your family has. And you definitely didn't ask to be this ghostly white. But as soon as you've learned to live with it for a while (less wrinkles later on in life, right? right???) someone has to ruin it for you. They have to flaunt they're perfectly tanned body from Spring Break and hold their sun-kissed skin against yours. But I've had enough... here are the things that perpetually pale individuals are tired of hearing.
