5 Reasons Why You Should Not Stalk People On Social Media

We all do it. While some might not admit it, stalking people's social media profiles is something we are constantly doing. We might not even be aware of it, but it definitely happens. While it may seem entertaining, it is actually better to not stalk people on social media, and here's why.

1. You'll probably find something that annoys you.

Whether it's the topic of the post, the caption on a photo, or someone who left a comment, something will get under your skin a little. You'll wonder why they chose that caption or why they chose to post that in the first place. If it shows up on your news feed, and you see something you don't like, keep scrolling, because the more you stalk, the more things you find that you probably won't like.

2. Stalking one person leads to stalking others.

How many times have we been creeping on one photo of a person, then clicking on the tagged person, then going to the person's profile who commented on the last person's last status? Before you know it, you've stalked about 10 different people on social media, who you may or may not even know. Don't let your stalking of one person expand to stalking many.

3. Comparisons.

Whether we are saying good things about the person or bad things, we usually end up comparing them to ourselves. We think things like, "Oh, man, her hair looks awful. I'm glad mine doesn't look like that," or "She has the perfect body! Why can't I look that way?" Either way, if you would stop stalking these people, maybe you wouldn't be so judgmental of others or put yourself down so much. Stop the comparisons, because nobody wins.

4. You risk accidentally liking their posts.

I've accidentally liked so many pictures on Instagram, it's embarrassing. Before you go too hard on stalking one's profile, stop and think to yourself, would I be okay if I accidentally liked something on this page from 36 weeks ago, or would I be embarrassed by that? Even if the person is a good friend of yours, this can be so embarrassing. Don't take the risk. Just stay off of their profiles to avoid yourself the embarrassment.

5. Other people will know you're a creep.

If you stalk people on social media, other people will find out about it. It could be the case that you took the risk and did accidentally like an old photo. Well, whoever's photo you liked, they probably told everyone that was around them at the time that you liked their post. Or, you told on yourself. "Did you see what 'such and such' has been posting about on Facebook?" I mean, honestly, we do this so much. Not only did you stalk someone, but then you let somebody else know that you've been stalking people!

So, stop being a creep. Stop stalking others on social media. Enjoy what is on your news feed, and maybe actually try to get to know people outside of the social media world. So much time is wasted on social media anyway, and nobody wants to be known as a creep. So, put the phones and laptops away, go out, and enjoy life in the real world.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours.
