Lights. Music. People.

These are some of the things that immediately stick out to people when they think of concerts. Whether you've been to one or one hundred concerts, each one is a new experience. Each concert has a unique vibe and group of people. Concerts are the best way to extract yourself from "the real world" and enter into a place with people who love the same music as you.

Here are some of the best parts about attending a concert or festival:

1. Seeing your favorite artists in person

Of course, this has to be number one. It is a whole different experience to listen to an artist on your way to class, during a workout, or in the car and seeing them in person. Most of the time a song sounds SO much better to live than it ever could through earbuds. Not to mention it's always a unique experience to see your favorite artist in pictures and then seeing them right in front of your eyes.

2. That moment when everyone sings the words together

This is an aspect of a concert that is indescribable. There is no better feeling than being in a huge crowd and everyone is shouting the same lyrics. The experience is even more amplified if the artist stops the music or stops singing and lets the crowd carry the song.

3. Stage

For festivals and bigger arena shows, stages are a huge part of the concert experience. From laser, lights, visuals, and props, the stage brings the music to another level. Stage productions are so unique to each show an artist that it's become an important part of the concert experience. I've found that some of the best stage visuals are found at EDM shows. Recently, I saw an Excision show and the visuals blew my mind. He also brought out a dinosaur that blew CO2 out of its nose. What more could you want?

4. Crowd

The type of crowd at a concert or festival can make or break the experience. I've been to countless shows where I met so many nice people and had a great experience interacting with people who have similar interests. Even one of my best friends and I bonded because of a particular artist. However, I've also been to EDM shows that have had terrible crowds. From rowdy boys and girls that are too drunk, the crowd can affect your experience a lot.

5. Fun outfits

Looks aren't everything, but at concerts and festivals, they can be as important as you want them to be. From the rise of Coachella, finding the right outfit for a festival is huge. From cutoff shorts, flowers, glitter, and whatever else you want to wear, creative freedom is welcomed. You can never wear too much glitter to a festival, it's a fact.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
