The underdogs from Philly are making a comeback in a big way. With a new QB, new coach, and new passion for the game, the birds are 3-0 as I write this. All of the buzz and success around them this year points to one conclusion; the Eagles will win the Superbowl. Here are 5 reasons why, as though you don't already know them:
1. Rookie Quarterback Carson Wentz
Standing at 6'5", and weighing 237lbs, the Philadelphia Eagles's 1st round, 2nd overall draft pick of 2016 is a monster on the field. Starting his NFL career 3-0 (3 wins and 0 losses), he brings the otherwise pessimistic Eagles fans to the edge of their seats at home and in the stadium. Here are some of his startling numbers: 102 pass attempts with 0 interceptions (breaking the previous NFL record for a rookie), completing 66 of his 102 passes, Wentz holds a 64.7% completion rate, 769 total passing yards with an additional 5 touchdowns to top it off. These numbers in his first three games are absolutely insane, and if he continues on this path (avoiding injury), he will help the Eagles win the Super Bowl.
2. Wide Receiver Jordan Matthews
Jordan Matthews ended the 2015-2016 football season just 3 yards short of 1,000 yards receiving. This year, Matthews seems to pick up right where he left off. Matthews has averaged a stellar 13.6 yards per reception with a total of 204 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 10 first downs so far this season. Considering this is only 3 games into the season, Matthews is looking forward to a productive season ending with a ring.
3. The Offensive Line
The unsung heroes of the NFL are the offensive linemen. While Carson Wentz took a few hits in the first two weeks running out of the pockets, the line has kept great protection of him. His quick release of the football helps, for sure. These men, however, are the key to success for any offense.
4. The Running Back Core
The running back core in Philadelphia seems to be working on all cylinders. The 4 backs (Darren Sproles, Kenjon Barner, Wendell Smallwood, and Ryan Matthews) have rushed for a combined 5 touchdowns and 337 yards. They seem to be quite generous with the touches and try to maximize their yards as much as possible with a long of one 30 yard run by Ryan Matthews. The Eagles seem to be throwing well, but are also able to run the ball effectively and keep the opposing defense on the edge.
5. The Defense
Last, but certainly not least, the Eagles defense has been a key to success in Philadelphia. The Eagles have scored 92 points, but the defense has only let up 27 points. One of the best teams in the league, the Pittsburgh Steelers, were only able to manage a measly field goal worth 3 points. This defense has not received quite enough praise, but they will when the Super Bowl comes around
Overall, the Philadelphia Eagles, a team with 0 Super Bowl victories, can finally seeing some sunlight and should plan to seize every moment of it. The 2016-2017 season shall be the Philadelphia Eagles's first Super Bowl victory.
Fly, Eagles, Fly!
