10 Struggles And Blessings Of Chopping Off Your Long Hair

I miss the braids but I love not having tangles.

These past few years, I have decided to be very experimental with my hair. Growing up, I had very rarely done anything truly permanent to it. I would occasionally do a boxed dye, to see what I would like as a platinum blonde, red-head, or brunette. I would occasionally do highlights. But then I decided to do something fun. I took all of the hair that was almost down to just past the middle of my back, and bleached it and dyed it blue. I loved it. From that point on, I did all sorts of cool colors. At some point, I decided I wanted to shave the underside of my head, because I had always thought it was so cool. I was not disappointed. From there, I cut my hair shorter and shorter, until I ended up with a pixie cut. Sometimes I find myself missing my hair, and sometimes I'm glad the dead weight is gone.

Why I Miss My Hair:

1. When I see cute styles on Pinterest

Pinterest is honestly the worst. I see so many cute hair styles with long hair, and I feel my phantom strands of hair around my shoulder. *sigh* Just have to wait a few more years.

2. When the wind blows through my hair

Yeah, I may have wanted to use the gif, but in all honesty, I actually do miss when the wind would hit my hair just right. It kind of made me feel like a Disney princess.

3. My ears get cold.

When I had long hair, I could usually rely on it to keep my ears relatively warm. Now, I bring hats with me to class just in case my ears suddenly go numb with the cold.

4. Braiding my hair

Braiding my hair was always so relaxing for me. (Probably because it took so long to get all of it done). So one thing I definitely miss is being able to sit back in my chair and class, and braid while listening to a presentation.

5. Twirling my hair when I'm nervous or bored

One of my tics, when I was nervous or bored, was twirling my hair. It looks really weird when I try to twirl my short hair...

Why I Do Not Miss My Long Hair:

1. Shampooing is so much easier.

My hair was so thick in addition to being long that I would literally have to fill my palm twice with shampoo. Even then I had to spread it out to make sure all of my hair was lathered up.

2. Not having to spend 30 minutes doing my hair in the morning

One thing I definitely do NOT miss is how much time I wasted brushing or doing my hair in the morning. Thirty minutes to an hour. That's not an exaggeration. Now? I occasionally take a comb through it. Maybe add some mousse. Five minutes tops.

3. Hair dye grows out quicker.

Short hair means that I can bleach and dye my hair all sort of cool colors, then a month or two later, I can chop it all off and start again!

4. No tangles or nests!

The absolute worst part of long hair was having to detangle it every five minutes. If the wind blew the wrong way, I had an instant 'rat's nest'.

5. Not finding pieces of long hair everywhere

One thing I hated, and I mean hated, about having long hair, was finding strands everywhere. Though I cut my hair from very long to chin length last winter, I am still finding strands of super long hair, in my new college room.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
