5 Reasons I Love Living In The Fine Arts House

Living Learning Communities (LLCs) are a great way to meet people with the same interests as you or the same or similar major as you. I, as a dance performance major, live on LLC for fine art majors. I live on the amazing Fine Arts House at NIU. Living here, I get to meet other dancers, music education and music performance majors, all different kinds of art majors, BFA acting majors and BA theater majors. Although if you want to live on this floor but you are not a fine art major you still can; however, you must have a fine art major friend to live with in order to live on this floor. This in fact is my second year living on this floor. I loved it so much my freshman year I decided to live on it again as a sophomore.

1. Meet other artists.

As an artist, it is always great to make new friendships with other artist of several different areas of the arts. You never know how you can collaborate on projects to create something spectacular. Maybe an artist could draw a picture that a dancer and/or actor could use it to create a performance piece and then maybe a musician could play some music to go along with it. Anything could happen.

2. Connections through the arts

Whether you need them for something now or in the future you have a connection with all of the other artists on your floor. You never know when someone's artistic skills could come in handy for you. This way you will possibly already know someone who could do what you need for you with having to search too far.

3. Family

In the Fine Arts House, everyone becomes like one big family. Everyone knows everyone for the most part. You almost always see a cheerful face around the corner. You know if you need anything you can go knock on one of your neighbor's door and ask. Even after you leave this floor you are still apart of the floor somehow because you will probably always know at least one person who lives on this floor.

4. Lifelong friendships

You make the best kind of friendships on this floor. Friendships that will never disappear. It is probably because everyone on this floor is an artist and artists tend to be friends with other artists. At first people might be shy, but by the end of the year for the most part everyone has made tons of friends on the floor that they never want to loose.

5. Colorful hallways

Throughout our hallway there are many different murals on the walls. Almost every single room has their own surrounding their door. Also there is the one on the outside of the bathroom. Around my door I have a brick wall with a iron gate around it. To name others there is also one with The Beatles and another with Elephants.

We don't buy into these... just like how we don't buy our friends.

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
