5 Reasons You Love Inside Jokes With Your Best Friend

My best friend, she is funny, crazy, loud, lovable, kind, and amazing. We know what makes each other tick and what makes each other laugh. We know how to make each others day and how to surprise each other. She has been my inspiration to step out of my comfort zone and do adventurous things and I have been her maturing role model to become an adult, I hope. We have known each other for almost 13 years now, that means a lot of memories, a lot of inside jokes.

The other day my best friend and I were reminiscing on some of our favorite memories and inside jokes. I was laughing so hard my ribs hurt, it was amazing. Just being able to talk about all the funny moments that we can still laugh at and bring up any time we please. It got me thinking: why are inside jokes so valuable, they are just a small moment in a friendship where you two laughed a lot harder than necessary.

The importance of an inside joke is that it creates a lasting memory that can be laughed at for years and years to come. Here are all my reasons why inside jokes are so important to have with your best friend.

1. They are good stories to tell

Lets be honest, almost every time you are with your best friend at some time an inside joke comes up and you both just start cracking up. Not to mention if you are with other friends and they say something that reminds you of an inside joke you start laughing and then have to explain why its so funny. Now they might not understand it but it gave you a good laugh.

2. Your best friend will never forget them

I know that any time I try and forget about a funny moment, where my best friend thought it was funny but I didn't, she will bring it right back up. Like the time I tried to braid my hair in a ton of braid and when I took them out I looked like I had an afro. My best friend called me afro for weeks, and still does to this day. Or the time my best friend got gum stuck in her hair in the middle of church and her mom had to drag her out to put peanut butter in her hair. Yeah, I am always telling her to be careful so she doesn't get gum in her hair.

3. They bring up good memories with your best friend

When my best friend and I start talking about an inside joke we will sit there for hours and reminisce on every great memory we have together. It makes me so happy to just think about all the great adventures we have shared together and how they at some point have made us laugh our butts off. It also makes me excited to see the new and grander adventures we will go on as we grow older.

4. There is an endless supply of them

No matter how old you two get there will always be a supply of inside jokes you hold over them and they hold over you. There will always be new jokes coming but they will never replace the old ones from when you first met. I know that even though my best friend and I are older we still joke about the inside jokes we have from middle school, those that no one should ever know about because they aren't even funny.

5. Even when you live far away they still come around

Now that I am in college and live an hour and a half away from my best friend, from time to time, I will get a text message or a Facebook post about an inside joke that just makes my entire day. Its the best thing ever because sometimes you really miss your best friend and getting that reminder can make your whole day better. That's the thing with inside jokes they make you happy. And the moment I see my best friend again you know that every inside joke possible will come out and we will probably create more and more.

I have come to know that I need inside jokes in my life. They are my way of remembering a moment in my life where I genuinely laughed and it felt good. I think that it is important to have these inside jokes with your best friend so you never forget why they are your best friend.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
