Summer -- it's all about sunshine, s'mores, and long summer nights of making memories with friends. As a student we wait all year for summer because it means we can go home, forget about schoolwork, and avoid real responsibilities while eating freeze pops all day long. So why would anyone not be excited for summer?
1. Having to Say Good-Bye to Friends.
We all have our friends that we see at home during breaks that we probably went to school with or have known for a while, but what about all your new school friends that have made college such an adventure? Although you can visit each other, spending three months without being just a walk across campus away is just unbearable. Imagine months without those friends that make late night study sessions enjoyable, make you feel less guilty for eating a whole pint of ice cream while binge watching Netflix, or are able to pick you up when Chemistry lab has you down. Good-bye isn't forever, but three months sure feels like it.
2. Finishing that one course that you secretly loved.
I don't think many students enjoy going to classes everyday, but I think many of us have that one class that we genuinely really enjoy and find extremely interesting. It's that class that we put before all others because the homework and readings are actually enjoyable. It's the class that has the best
professor you have ever had who will most likely be the go-to person for all future references for jobs or grad schools. I know that not having classes in summer is the best, but sometimes I think it would be nice to resume that great class in the fall.
3. Having to Say Good-Bye to Senior Friends
Unlike all the other friends who you will see again in the fall, there are those friends who will be
graduating, getting real jobs in the real world, and you might never see them again. The seniors are always the people you look up to as they are so close to being in the real world, but when they are gone, not only will you miss them, but it means you are next to leave.
4. Moving Home Again
I love my parents and miss them so much when I have lived away from home, but transitioning from living with friends on your own to living at home again is truly a challenge. It's weird getting used to having to tell your parents where you are going or not being able to eat pizza and ice cream every night. Sometimes you wonder if you should just move away all year instead of coming home for summer, but room and board is free at home so it's probably worth it.
5. Having to Leave Campus.
I know it sounds crazy, but my college campus truly feels like home away from home for me. We all have our favorite study places on campus, the campus Starbucks barista that knows your order without you saying a word, your favorite cafeteria, and your dorm and roommates that have begun to feel like a family. Going home for a while is great, but part of you will definitely miss the place that has become "home".
