5 Reasons Everyone Misses NKU

Summer's almost over - but, is that really a bad thing?

With less than a month until fall semester starts, the grieving process has officially started. Who wants to give up beach days, camping trips, adventures, relaxation, extra cash flow, and all the extra Netflix time? Let’s be real, the answer to that question is hardly anybody. But before we don our funeral attire, maybe we should take a step back. As much as Norse Nation loves summer, we love our school even more. If you’re having a hard time turning your frown upside down, take a second to remember why you should be hyped for this new semester.

The Place to Hang

If there’s anything NKU has an abundance of, its places to hang out. For those who need inspiration, the calm atmosphere and beauty of Griffin Hall never fails to delight. When you need to hunker down and study hard, Steely is the go-to. When it’s time to socialize – there’s Commons, nooks in every dorm building, and a million other places all over campus. Of course, there are times when all three coincide. Those are the times you head to the third floor of Steely – hello Einstein’s! I know that I’ve been craving one of their white chocolate mochas all summer.

The New Rec Center

Anyone who claims they aren’t excited for the newly (and majorly) renovated rec center is clearly out of their gourd. I mean this baby has got it ALL. Let’s go through the list starting with a ROCK CLIMBING WALL. Not just that, but also a climbing wall in the dive tank (yeah, the new natatorium with a dive well, active shallow water area, and an eight lane competition pool). There’s also a MAC Gym for floor hockey and soccer, two racquetball courts, three multi-purpose rooms, six basketball courts, a sauna, 17k feet of weight and fitness space, study areas, and a patio for concerts and other outdoor events. Not to mention, the building is plain gorgeous.

Student Life A.K.A. The Student Union

Three words: Sweet. Potato. Fries. Well, okay…although Coyote Jacks is bae, there are a lot of other reasons why the SU needs to be back in our lives ASAP. It’s the hub of student life! There’s the daily Starbucks run before your 8 AM…or 9 AM…or 10 AM. Then the insane lunch rush that occurs exactly at noon. Not to mention the excitement of all the tables set up on the day-to-day by different organizations. There’s just something about strolling into the SU that can make you feel better, even on your worst days.

The Bistro is Back

On the subjects of new and of food, this fall Callahan Bistro is finally supposed to reopen! Although there’s still a lot of guessing to do on the student end, we can assume the bistro followed the original conceptual design announced back in the spring. That means five different themes (called escape, gather, relax, play, and breathe) and new food stations similar to that of Norse Commons. I believe most of us can agree that we’re just happy bistro will soon be back in business. Is it just me or did it always taste better than commons?

Your Friends!

If for some reason you’re still having a hard time getting excited about returning to campus, you know you miss your friends. From Greek life to LARPers to those who opposed to involvement, there’s no such thing as a lonely soul at NKU; and there’s no lack of the interconnection between any and all groups. Whether they’re across town, across the state, across the country, or across the world, in a few short weeks all of Norse Nation will be reunited.

Creating your schedule for the upcoming semester can be an exciting process. You have the control to decide if you want to have class two-days a week or five-days a week. You get to check things off of your requirement checklist. It's an opportunity for a fresh start with new classes (which you tell yourself you'll never skip.) This process, which always starts out so optimistic, can get frustrating really quickly. Here are 25 thoughts you have when registering for classes.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:
