5 Reasons I Don't Miss High School

They said you would miss it, but I never looked back

5 Reasons I Don't Miss High School

You've been told your entire life to not wish for time to speed up. They always said that once you left high school, you would be begging to get back in. They said the real world sucks. You hear these things time and time again. But I never felt this way. They always called you crazy when you were a senior in high school excited to graduate. I do not miss being out of high school. I never have. Here are a few reasons why I am glad high school will always be a thing of the past.

1. Duration

When you get to college, you will only average roughly 4 hours of class a day. This is much better than the 8 you put in every day in high school. Not to mention the fact that you have to get out of bed around 6 AM. Now I understand that once you leave college (if you go) that you may have a job that requires you to get up at this time. However, at least there is some flexibility in this. In high school, you really didn't have a choice but to get out of bed and drag your body to school.

2. Freedom

Sometimes high school can feel like a jail. They tell you what classes you are going to take, they tell you when you can and cannot go to the restroom, and they often times give you detention for being 5 minutes late to class. Fast forward to college, and nobody cares if you don't show up for class. You don't have to ask for permission to use the restroom. Most importantly, you get to choose what classes you want to take, AND when you want to take them with a greater amount of freedom.

3. Dress Code

You can finally wear a hat whenever you want! Those shorts that you used to have to measure to make sure they met the length requirement? Don't worry about it anymore. I always thought it was dumb that you could not wear a beanie or a hat in high school. It was never doing any harm. I understand the shorts requirement, but sometimes it was simply enforced so strictly that teachers would ACTUALLY measure you. Jeans can have more than 2 holes in them, and you don't have to read the front of your shirt before you put it on. There is just so much more freedom when it comes to dress code that you never have to think twice.

4. Bullying/Drama/Fighting

Most people that go to college take it serious enough to the point where there are not a lot of fights. Most people are grown enough to the point where bullying is not an issue. Of course, there is still drama in college and in the real world, but nowhere near as dumb as in high school. I once witnessed a fight in high school over a cafeteria lunch seat. After high school there is a significant drop in the amount of fighting and bullying encountered.

5. Food

This category covers a variety of different things. I will start with the cafeteria. There is a limit to what you can get in high school. You usually have only 2 things to select from, and not to mention it usually isn't that great. After high school, whether it be college or the real world, there are many choices of food to select from at almost the same price. I will expand the food category to class now. It is almost seen as a sin in high school to bring any kind of food or drink into the room. Heck, some teachers disallow GUM in class.I get the childish act of taking your gum out and sticking it under the desk instead of throwing it away, but it'll never be perfect. It is also understandable that in high school there is ultimately no way to miss lunch. It is still a little over the top to me that teachers put such a strict rule on this.

I want to summarize this by firstly saying that I do not necessarily blame the teachers. I get that in high school, teachers have rules to follow just like the students. In this situation, the blame would belong to the staff & administration. But when you are in some classes that allow certain things and others that strict everything, it is hard to believe these teachers have rules to follow. People always told me that after high school I would be begging to be let back in, but that would be a nightmare to me.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
