"Community college? Oh... I mean, Community College how wonderful!!" Okay world I get it, why community college when I can do so much more? I think the better question is why force yourself to do so much more when you have community college? When I was a kid I imagined myself growing up and going to a kickass school like NYU or UCLA. I was going to be an unbelievable adult, but as I grew up I realized that I wasn't going to end up at some random university no one knows about, let alone my dream school. The reality is, I am not the sharpest tool in the shed and that is okay. I am just so tired of my peers, family members, friends and acquaintances asking me what my plans are for college and having an underwhelming, judgmental, sorry response in return. There is nothing wrong with community college and i'd like to break down a few reasons as to why I chose, and truly wanted to go to community college instead of a university.
It took me a long time to come to terms with the fact that community college was my future, but once I opened up my eyes I could see only stepping stones into a better future and a support system that can and will lift me up not push me down.
1. A Smoother Transition Into College Life
A smooth transition must be crucial in order to succeed on your own. For most people this will be their first time away from their families. Many say that if you've been to sleep away camp for an extended period of time, living with new people will be much easier. But for those who haven't spent that much time on their own, leaving home for the first time will be somewhat of a challenge. That's why community college is perfect. It'll give you time to see if you can balance your school and personal life as well as find an apartment and roommate to live with if you desire.
2. Flexible Schedule
Most community colleges offer a variety of classes seven days a week starting from the crack of dawn to late at night. So, if you're not a morning person there is no need to worry. If like me, you like to take your sweet time and community college also allows you to learn at your own speed. In my case, a full load of work equals 12 units (which is definitely too much for this freshman to handle in her first semester) so I have opted to take three or four units instead, and gradually work my way up.
3. Personalized Attention
One thing many people overlook when going to college is the quantity of people in their classes and how that may affect them. In some cases it doesn't affect them at all but in other cases some one may not be able to work in such a big environment. Community college provided you with different sized classes so you know what your getting when you sign up. Plus they will most likely offer a strong support system such as longer office hours and tutoring centers.
4. Money Saver
Do you see all that money that Ms. Lisa Turtle is holding in the gif above? Well that's all the money you can save if you decide to go down this path. Community college is extremely understanding when it comes to a student's tuition. No matter what you or your guardians are making money-wise, they always encourage you to apply for a scholarship of your choice to make things easier on you. Classes themselves are not that expensive either. Each class can range in price, but I highly doubt they will go into a three digit number.
5. You Have More Time To Think About your Profession
Kindergarten through college, what do they all have in common? They are all training you for the inevitable: a job. In my opinion, the best part of community college is having an extra two years to really think about what you want to be doing for the rest of your life. It gives us time to wonder whether that hobby you love so much can take care of not just you but the family you might decide to have. Maybe you'll find a new and exciting topic to learn about and pursue! But you'll never know if you never try. Either way there is no denying that these two years will be amazing no matter what!
So, for those who are confused with my decision to attend community college, I hope you at least have an understanding as to why it is a wonderful and worthy decision you may even consider. Look into it- I promise it won't hurt!
