Not only is Halloween a great excuse to play in the dark, dress up in homemade costumes, and eat cheap candy – but here is a list of 5 reasons why I believe Halloween is necessary for every human being to experience.

  1. Become Someone Else

Sometimes we have the desire to be another person. Who doesn't want to spend a day as a cowboy, a fairy princess, or your favorite movie character? Halloween is the time where you can temporarily change your career, your personality, and even your gender! You can be your childhood role model, your inner desire, or your greatest fear. It's healthy for humans to take a step out of the mundane and become someone (or something!) else for a time.

  1. Personify Death

Death is scary. It could happen anytime and anywhere. Death is no respecter of persons: the stranger sitting next to you, a beloved parent, and even yourself. And what happens after death? Only very few have claimed to trespass the realm of the afterlife and come back to tell the tale. Death ends life, and that scares people. Halloween is an opportunity to turn death into a childish cartoon character. To make it a scary monster that can be personified and fought. As humans, we need to feel a sense of control and understanding for something that brings us fear, and Halloween is a time we can do that.

  1. It's TRADITION!

Traditions keep us together. It is a link for generations. If your family had a tradition of receiving socks on their birthday that began generations ago, imagine the connection you would feel when you hear the stories of your great grandmother receiving socks on her birthday when she was a child. You have a bond, a similarity. The same is true for Halloween. Because Halloween is a tradition experienced by many families, it unifies our society together in many ways.

  1. An Excuse To Eat Junk Food

Although I'm personally not a big fan of candy, Halloween is my excuse to run to the store and buy a bag of Almond Joy. Even if you don't need justification to buy candy, there are other Halloween treats to enjoy. There are roasted apples, Witch's Fingers, and caramel corn. All formality dispensed and good old-fashioned eating takes over the menu. And where there is food, you can usually find friends and family to share it with.

  1. We All Need a Good Scare

There is a chemical release that occurs in your brain after a good scare, especially one that is mild in nature. Daily life has a tendency to bottle up, causing either psychological stress or physical tension (like in the neck or shoulders). When you get scared, your body goes into a fight or flight response. It forces your brain to focus on what is the biggest priority and do it. In a way, Halloween is a monitored way for your body to cleanse itself of any mundane baggage it's carrying and let out a loud scream.

So, with Halloween just around the corner, make sure to schedule it into your calendar. Let this Halloween be an essential for everyone this season. We all need it!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
