5 Reasons to Avoid Whitewater Entirely this Summer

As the month of May has come and gone, it's come to be that time of year when everyone is looking to plan their summer vacation. Some families like to keep it simple and traditional with a trip to Disney World. Your family, however, may be wanting to try something a little more out-of-the-box. Maybe you've seen a flier for whitewater rafting and thought it would be fun to give it a try. If that's the case, then do I have news for you. Here's a list of 5 reasons why you should avoid whitewater entirely this summer, and why it definitely will not be a good time for anyone in your family.

1. It's no fun.

First of all, everyone who is doing any kind of whitewater activity is drenched in misery. Just look at them. You can ask anyone, the smiles that you see on their faces are due to the fact that they're glad their whitewater trip is almost over, and definitely not because it's a rewarding pastime with unique opportunities to immerse yourself in nature.

2. No one will want to go with you.

Whitewater is so dangerous and scary, that it's totally unrealistic for you to expect to find an experienced guide or company to take you rafting on a river (there definitely aren't nine rafting companies on the Nantahala River alone). And there just aren't any venues available for you to learn how to kayak. Really, why bother?

3. It doesn't look cool.

All of your friends will think you look like a dweeb for wearing water shoes in a rubber boat. It doesn't even matter if you're dropping into a sick rapid if you look dumb, and everyone knows the most important thing about vacation is looking good.

4. The guides are just in it for the money.

They don't care about having fun! They're here because they are passionate about earning minimum wage.

5. It's ugly to look at.

There is nothing visually pleasing about the one-of-a-kind views you'll have from the river.

All in all, why would you want to step outside of your comfort zone and try whitewater? You'll just get soaked, full of nature, and you'll regret not having done it sooner. It's best to just stay far away.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
