Being a math major is pretty tough. Well what makes life harder are the questions or reactions we math fanatics get whenever we are asked what we are studying. These are the same five reactions I get asked on the regular that I will be forever salty about.
1. "Whoa...so you are like good at math?"
Well I sure would hope so if I decided to study math for four years at a liberal arts college.
2. "So you want to be a teacher?"
According to the University of Houston, these are the top 10 jobs for those of us studying math:
- Web Site Manager
- Actuary
- Computer Systems Analyst
- Software Engineer
- Mathematician
- Computer Programmer
- Accountant
- Industrial Engineer
- Hospital Administrator
- Web Developer
3. "Why would you do that to yourself?"
I am studying math because I am good at math and I really enjoy it. I am terrible at history, so I'm not a history major. Why would I do something I am not good at? Right?
4. "So...you are like smart or something?"
Do I have to explain this one?
5. "That is so cool! Good for you!"
OK, so I am not salty about this one, but this is usually said after the above four questions are asked and I have already confused the poor soul I am talking to.
