Here are the top five common misconceptions that we, as meteorology majors, hear throughout our time and are tired of answering:
1. Do you study meteors?
Although this is a common misconception, we actually study the weather.
2. Are you gonna be on TV?, When will we see you on the news?, Are you going to be next Ginger Zee?
Meteorologists have jobs at the National Weather Service, private sector companies, and in Emergency Management Agencies. Although all of the broadcast meteorologists are wonderful, the TV life isn't for all of us.
3. Don't you get paid to be wrong?
The atmosphere is always changing and there is no way that we can catch everything out there. Yes, we might mess up a forecast but because of the technology of today we are pretty accurate one to three days out. Plus remember all of those beautiful sunny days we forecasted correctly?
4. Did you hear about the POLAR VORTEX?
Contrary to the media, the polar vortex is not a new phenomena. In fact there has always been a "polar vortex." Just because it's ungodly cold out, doesn't mean that it is the end of the world.
5. What's this winter is going to be like?
There is no way that we can accurately tell you what the weather for any upcoming season is going to be like. As stated earlier, the atmosphere is always changing. Just enjoy the weather you're having now and ask when the question seems a bit more pertinent. Like in that season.
