Being a waitstaff in a restaurant is hard work. You're on your feet for several hours a day, dealing with all sorts of stresses and doing your best to make sure your customers are happy; at the end of the day, your pay in tips is largely performance based. However, serving is a rewarding job in many ways. Here are some of the pros and cons of picking up a job as a waitstaff.
Pro: Let’s be real here. Tips.
Con: You’re only paid around $2 because of tips, so a set salary is never a thing.
Pro: Discounted food! At most places, you get great discounts on the food you serve day-in and day-out. My personal favorite was the chocolate chip pancakes that the kitchen staff always assured me they made with love.
Con: You serve this food day in and day out, so you can get kind of sick of it.
Pro: You get to meet some really interesting people. If you’re like me and love people, then talking to people all day long is the best thing you could ask for in a job.
Side Pro: Regulars are the best.
Con: Sometimes your customers aren’t happy campers, and there’s nothing you can do about that. Just remember, you’re a fabulous waitstaff.
Pro: You burn tons of calories walking around every day! I kept track of my steps on my phone and discovered that I walked about 5.5 miles in a seven hour shift.
Con: Your feet kill you at the end of every day.
Pro: You get really good at keeping a poker face under pressure; you learn how to work in a hectic environment.
Con: YOU JUST WANT TO YELL AT EVERYONE BUT YOU CAN’T.
You can take your waitstaff skills to any restaurant to pick up a job easily whenever you need and wherever you are. Waitstaffing is an awesome opportunity to improve your interpersonal skills while having fun with your coworkers and making money! If you've never waitstaffed before and need a quick, flexible job, look into it! You won't regret it.
