Back to school season is looming around the corner of August for most high schoolers, which means it's time to hit the books and finish those summer assignments. Before the stress of buying school supplies and meeting new teachers, try these tools to get past your summer slump and into a more productive workflow.

1. Workflowy

Workflowy is the perfect minimalistic tool for someone who has too many things to handle. The simple layout features a virtual blank "sheet" of paper that allows you to input everything on your mind. It also allows users to dial into or rear back into a specific bullet point, which is helpful when handling a project with many tasks or trying to look at the big picture. Another great feature is the ability to cross out a bullet point when you are finished with it, which gives you a sense of satisfaction after completing a task.

2. Plan

If you're a more visual and like to plan down to the minute, Plan is essential to keep your sanity! The highlight of this tool is the calendar that synchronizes with your task list. Plan also tracks your daily, weekly and monthly accomplishments based on your productivity. This tool and gives insights on where you spend most of your time, whether that be at a particular location, in meetings or time allotted for each task list. The sleek design and color scheme are an added incentive to work hard towards your goals as well.

3. Trello

Trello is a visual and virtually tactile planner tool that can be customized to suit your goals. This tool is based on the Kanban system, a Japanese system popularized by Toyota, and is used to "visualize the workflow." It divides boards into lists which contain individual tasks, allowing storage for notes and other information. Individual boards are highly customizable with the drag and drop feature, as well as power-up connections, which make it especially vital for group projects. If you are someone that prefers kinesthetic learning, this is the tool for you!

4. Noisli

Ever found yourself distracted by silence or distracting background noise while you're trying to concentrate? Noisli offers a simplistic background noise generator to help you focus on the task at hand. It features multiple rhythmic tones that you can mix and match to your liking in order to encourage a relaxed but focused productivity session. The ever-changing background colors complement the music perfectly as well for a calming effect. You can either choose a pre-existing sound combo or create your own.

5. Moosti

Do you get distracted easily or do you like to take long breaks between tasks? Moosti is a fantastic tool to help keep you focused! It uses the Pomodoro technique, which segments a productivity session into a 25-minute working period followed by a five-minute break. Moosti is quite customizable as well; it offers five different color themes and allows users to set the times for their productivity sessions based on personal preference.

Good luck on your summer assignments and school work!

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated.
