Lent, if you're a Christian, is that time of the year when you give up something for 40 days. As the years have gone by, I have found it harder to think of something to give up for lent.
Especially in college, it is extremely difficult to practically think of something to give up. In college, you are already living very minimalistic when it comes to buying food and alcohol, so giving up something tends to be harder than it sounds. But here is a list of some of the practical things you can give up for Lent while you're in college!
1. Beer
Yes, I know beer is every college kid's go-to drink, but there are many more options to drink just as cheap! Instead of getting a 12 pack of Miller Lite, opt for splitting a bottle of Burnetts with friends or even getting a cheap bottle of wine.
2. Smoking Cigarettes
While in college, most students pick up the habit of smoking while they are drinking, and then it eventually evolves into a everyday thing.Cigarettes are bad for you, and even if you pick up the habit in college, you can still quit while you're there. So why not start now? 40 days without smoking, why not give it a try?
3. Fast Food
Who doesn't love Bojangles, Chick-Fil-A or Cookout? It might seem like the end of the world giving up your beloved Chicken Minis, Chicken Finger Tray or Cajun Chicken Biscuit for 40 days, but it's worth a try. Spring break is around the corner anyway, so giving up fast food for 40 days might just be worth it!
4. Procrastination
The middle of the semester is approaching and that is when college students get their laziest. From first hand experience, I know during the middle of the semester I do not want to get up and go to class. During lent, instead of skipping all your classes, you should make a point to go to all of them!
5. Drunk Eating
Michelangelo's pizza, Jimmy John's subs and Supdog's cheesy tots are every ECU college student's go-to food to eat after the bars close. But every morning when they wake up, they regret all the carbohydrate filled food they had the night before. So instead of giving up a certain type of food all together for lent, you should give up drunk eating late at night!
Giving up something for 40 days is a long time and usually it is broken once or twice. But this year, give up something practical that you know you can accomplish. Even if you do slip up from time to time, who cares we're human!
