We all want that perfect bod, but at what cost? Today, people are going to drastic lengths to shed some pounds and get their body ready for whatever season they feel like showing off that six-pack. Are we too quick to buy into the hype?
Detox Water Diet
There’s this fad going around that has people believing that for a whole week, nothing but fruit-infused water is supposed to help you “detox” your body. But in actuality, you’re depriving your body of important nutrients it needs to function on a daily basis. You need carbs, protein, healthy fats and natural sugars. By not allowing your body to have anything to provide you with energy, you can see not only your stamina but your overall disposition plummet by the end of your “diet.” The key to dieting is not to starve yourself, but to replenish your body with healthy alternatives. Instead of “detoxing,” over-hydrating is your best bet to flushing out your system. Drink a lot of water, but don’t only drink water!
Working Out With Body Wraps
Now I was never one to buy into the hype of body wraps. The best way to lose weight is through a healthy diet and exercise. But to each their own. However, people are taking this fad to a whole new level, and working out while wearing a wrap or a waist-cincher. NO. PLEASE NO. You’re restricting your breathing, which you absolutely need to work out properly, and just the idea of compressing your belly and everything it contains together while doing crunches is only going to irritate your insides and put unneeded stress on your body in an unhealthy way. Just work out.
The Baby Food Diet
Seriously. People do this. They replace one or two meals a day with a few cans of baby food. But in order to get a number of calories your body needs in order to properly function, you’d need about 14 cans of it… First, who has time for that? And second, why wouldn’t you just grab some fruit and call it a day? Because it’s mashed, it must be healthy? Babies obviously don’t need the same things we do, so we shouldn’t be replacing our meals with anything other than… well, our meals.
Hot Workouts
Hot yoga, Pilates, etc. Yes, sweating during a workout is a good thing… if you’re sweating from the workout, not the heat in the room. Not only does this subject you to dehydration, but said dehydration can lead to dizziness, lack of coordination, and it doesn’t help you burn any extra calories, contrary to popular belief. Just do regular yoga, you’ll thank me later.
Weight Loss Supplements
A supplement is something that your body needs but you’re not getting in your daily diet. Instead of taking these supplements, you should be altering your diet to include the specific nutrients your body needs! And no supplement that causes rapid weight loss is natural, nor can it be good for you. Healthy weight loss is achieved by a combination of exercise, diet, and better lifestyle changes, not from a pill that magically sheds the pounds. Haven’t you ever wondered why you’re shedding those pounds? I say natural is better, so stay on the safe side and kick some butt!
So there ya have it, some of the popular “health” trends of today that maybe you should be rethinking before giving them a try. There’s always a healthier alternative! Know any other crazy fads you think should make the list? Comment below!
