With the recent release of Pokemon GO many of us experienced a revival of our childhood love for Pokemon. To make things even better, on November 18th Pokemon Sun & Moon Version were released for the Nintendo 3DS. These titles revive the the two decades old franchise with new Pokemon, an emotional story, and intense battles. However, before you put your old training cap back on and start playing there's a few things you should know. After all, Pokemon has changed a lot since 1996.
1. There are a LOT more Pokemon than there were 90s
As of the release of Pokemon Sun & Moon there are currently 801 different cute and tough Pokemon to encounter. This is a huge jump from the original 151 Pokemon we grew up with. With this many Pokemon to find, catching them all might not be as easy as it used to be.
2.There are plenty of new ways to connect with friends
With the technology of 2016 there are so many new ways to have fun with your friends while you play Pokemon. Back in the 90s you needed a link cable in order to connect with your friend's GameBoy. Today you can easily battle and trade with your friends over wi-fi. Also, with the introduction of trading Pokemon over wifi, it's never been as easy to get the exact Pokemon you want.
3. The Pokemon formula has been completely overhauled!
Previously, every Pokemon game followed a very template formula for how the game would be played out. However, Sun & Moon have completely thrown that out the window in favor of a deep and emotionally engaging story line that you will uncover as you explore the new Alola region on your island challenge.
4. A new region to explore
This is to be expected, but with every new generation of Pokemon also comes a new region. This time around the new Alola region takes a large amount of inspiration from Hawaii. The game takes place over several tropical islands, each with it's own personality and inhabitants for you to meet. This is a very big change from the original games which featured a very monotonous region where everything felt very much the same.
5. It's still the Pokemon you remember
If you're a 90s baby who fell in love with the original 150 Pokemon then you will love this game. Despite all the changes they've made, at it's core it's still the Pokemon we know and love. You can still catch Pikachu, and you can still use your master ball to catch a level 3 Pidgey.
