5 Places To Visit In Lawrence, Kansas

Whether you attend the University of Kansas, know someone who does, or just find yourself taking a trip, there are plenty of reasons to head to the hometown of the Jayhawk, Lawrence. However, while many regulars to the town know their way around, if you are new, you might need some help deciding where to go. It's your lucky day! Here are five places you need to visit if you come to Lawrence, Kansas.

1. Allen Fieldhouse

There is no environment that compares to Allen Fieldhouse on any given night during basketball season. Every game is a sellout, and the fans are the loudest you will ever hear. Aside from the chills you get hearing the "Rock Chalk" chant, you can also take your visit as an opportunity to learn some history.

Walking into the front doors of the Fieldhouse leads you directly into the Booth Family Hall of Athletics, which details the University's history with a number of sports, and the founding history of basketball, as James Naismith himself coached at Kansas.

2. Mass Street

Massachusetts Street, simply called "Mass," is the heart and soul of the city. It is home to some of the best shops and restaurants in Lawrence, and has hosted some unplanned celebrations for national titles and, most recently, a Kansas City Royals World Series victory. If you're looking for a fun night out, there is no question of what street you want to end up walking.

3. The Granada

Located right in the heart of Mass Street, the Granada Theater is a historic building built in the 1930s. Music is best heard live, and catching a show here is hands down a good idea. Mostly smaller acts book the theater, which is where you can find some of the best unknown/local music that you'll be hooked on in no time. The smaller space inside provides some amazing acoustics and any band/artist has the ability to rock the place.

4. Free State Brewing Company

Another Mass Street location, Free State Brewery, has long been called one of the best if not the best restaurants in the city. The menu is ever-changing seasonally, and people come from all over to try some of the in-house brewed beers they offer. If you can only eat at one place on your visit, or just want to try some drinks, head down the all-too-familiar Mass.

5. Clinton Lake

Four miles west of the city is the beautiful and scenic Clinton Lake. It boasts one of the largest marinas in the state, hiking/biking trails, a beach, a disc golf course, boating, fishing, playgrounds, etc. If you need a break from school or work, this is a fantastic place to wind down and relax on a warm day.

Lawrence may be known primarily for the University of Kansas, but it offers so much more that will keep you coming back.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
