As a first-generation American with two Irish immigrant parents, I visit Ireland each summer to see relatives who are scattered across the country. These are my favorite places to visit each year. :)
1.) Athlone
At the dead center of the country, Athlone is a small, yet significant city that's definitely worth seeing. You can stroll around the town, shop 'til you drop, or grab a tasty bite to eat. The River Shannon, Ireland's longest river, runs through the town, inviting visitors to take a ride on a boat or set up a picnic on the water's edge. Moreover, if you're a history buff, Athlone's rich history will not fail to impress you. The Athlone Castle Visitor Center, located on the riverbank, is a museum that details the history of that region of Ireland, through interactive activities and intriguing galleries.
2.) Kerry
With sand dunes bordering the water, long beaches, and quaint towns, the county of Kerry never fails to wow visitors. As a frequent vacation destination for Ireland's residents, Kerry is definitely a beautiful spot for foreigners to check out. Make sure to stop by Inch beach, the longest sand beach in Western Europe.
3.) Dublin
You can't visit Ireland without checking out the capital city. Rich with history and culture, Dublin impresses all who visit. Trinity College, at the heart of the city, houses the famous Book of Kells in its historic library. Furthermore, Grafton Street teems with popular restaurants, pubs, clubs, and shops. The electric atmosphere on the street is amplified by street performers, set up about every 50 meters. And, lastly, be sure to check out Saint Stephen's Green, a public park in the city's center. The park is a beautiful setting for a nice stroll.
4.) Westport
Quite possibly my favorite place in Ireland, Westport is a unique town, alive with vibrant culture. Westport's streets are lined with shops ranging from upscale clothing stores to candy shops. With a four-screen cinema, a beautiful, historic church, and Carrowbeg River, the small town has a lot to offer. And, of course, not to be forgotten is Westport House, a beautiful and historic estate with lovely walks, a campground, and activities for the entire family.
5.) Galway- the city
The second-largest city in Ireland, Galway has much to offer. You can soak in the vibrant life of the city on Shop Street or watch the boats by the waterside. Don't forget to check out Salt Hill, the town right next to the city where you can jump off of the tall diving pier or walk by the beach.
