Upon entering my last year of college, especially since I'm graduating a semester early, I'm constantly getting questioned about what my post-university plans are. "What do you want to do with your life?" "What career are looking to have?" "Oh, you're an English major? Are you going to teach?"
Each time I get asked these questions, I just want to roll my eyes and walk away or throw a mini tantrum because the truth is, I don't really know what I'm going to be doing a year from now. A year from now I could be bumming in my apartment, futilely job hunting in a world where people value books and literary studies less and less, happy to wait for the next iPhone to come out. I could also be happily employed for my dream job, cruising the Northwest coast in my suddenly affordable new car.
But when it comes down to it, I'm just not sure what I'll be doing with my life then. And I've learned to be OK with that. Going with the flow is not a bad thing; it's a way to let life happen and explore the adventures that bloom around you. So here are a few relatable pictures to get you through the final year, even when you feel like pulling your hair out. And don't worry, plenty of us are right there with you.
Because finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel doesn't mean you're going to work any harder. It just shows that the end goal is (finally) attainable.
As I said earlier, everyone and their freaking grandmother will ask you this question. Forget about just answering it at holiday parties. You're part-time employer, that guy at the bus station you sometimes talk to, even a stranger you've known for three minutes will ask you. Seriously, why is everyone so obsessed with knowing?
Some of us may be proud of this while others are ashamed, but the truth of this meme is undeniable. It's even applicable to when the teacher completely misinterprets your obviously wrong answer and changes it to a fun, new perspective.
Despite the fact that it feels like this sometimes, you will get through it. You might bomb a Calculus exam or get lower than you hoped on your chemistry midterm, but that's not a reason to give up. Go out with your friends that weekend, cheer up, and study hard on Sunday (and the rest of the week, too). You'll get there.
Lastly, enjoy it. You'll never be able to go back.
Cheers to the senior class!
