I've seen countless articles listing all of the #retailprobs, and I relate every time. I recently wrapped up my fourth consecutive summer working retail, so I know can be a struggle. But through all the blood, sweat and tears (literally), I'm thankful for my job (well mostly my discount) and for all it has taught me. So let's stay positive! Here are five perks of working retail:
1. You learn to handle tough situations.
It's not a normal day at work unless you undergo a small crisis. I've learned to stay calm and collected in awkward situations. Most of the time, customers are pretty understanding, and willing to wait five extra minutes for you to deal with technical difficulties regarding the register. And when customers aren't so understanding, you smile a lot and assure them that you're doing everything you can.
2. You develop strong customer service skills.
You'll always go the extra length for the customer because...it's all about the customer. Customer service is a great skill to throw on your resume because it shows potential employers you care about the customer experience, which is a great marketing angle.
3. You learn how to carry on a good conversation.
My favorite part of my job is getting to know my customers. I've heard so many interesting, and sometimes life changing, stories from people I've talked to for 20 minutes. I've developed the skill to start a conversation with anyone, and it has proven useful in every environment.
4. You meet awesome people.
This goes with learning to hold a conversation. There's so many interesting people out there with some cool stores. Not to mention, I've met big name people such as professional athletes, news anchors and politicians.
Fun fact: Once I saw Natasha and Malia Ann Obama at work. It was pretty cool.
5. You appreciate other retailers, and in turn become a better customer.
Shopping is a whole new experience once you begin working retail. You're more patient and understanding of what's going on around you. You recognize what the salesperson goes through, making the shopping experience easier for you.
