I love food. In fact, my relationship with food borders on the line of obsession. When I'm not cooking or studying, I constantly sift through recipes; whether it be through Instagram short clips, the Reddit .gif format, or through the classic Youtube medium. Every time I'm on my phone (which is always) I'm thinking about what to cook or eat next. That being said, Youtube is still my go-to for food. It's my preferred format especially for recipe demos. So without further ado, in no particular order, I present a curated list of my favorite foodie channels.
1. Cooking with Dog
It's not what you think it is. Francis, the channel's mascot poodle, contributes a "voice-over" to Chef's traditional Japanese recipes. They have an extensive collection of recipes to binge on. My favorite recipes are their castella and karaage.
2. Foodwishes
Chef John is a formally trained cook who shares his kitchen wisdom with his viewers. He's like the Santa Claus of chefs. Chef John's jovial personality accents his whimsical voice; he's the only chef I would allow to get away with dad jokes. His channel is especially important because he includes his mistakes and experimental recipes. It serves as a reminder that cooking should be fun! My favorite recipes include his basil ricotta gnocchi and shakshuka.
3. Maangchi
The authority on Korean cooking. She's all about cooking and sharing the meal with friends and family. Maangchi's approach to cooking is with respect; she handles all her ingredients with this sort of cozy delicacy. Maangchi is both endearing and charming which makes it an absolute pleasure to watch her cook. She's the stylish Korean mama I wish I had. My favorite recipes of hers include the kimchi tofu stew, pork wraps, and the japchae.
4. You Suck At Cooking
You Suck At Cooking is the unglamorous parody to the traditional Food Network cooking shows. It's essentially the lovechild between internet memes and Rachael Ray. Enough said. My favorite "recipes" include his maple-baked salmon and break-up pasta.
5. Yuka Kinoshita
Kinoshita-san's channel isn't cooking-focused; it's eating. She's known as an "oogui" (big eater), and GODDAMN can she put it away. Her videos start off with a cheerful greeting and an introduction to her meal. Kinoshita's meal features an ungodly amount of food, which she finishes with a smile on her face. Fans call her the "gluttonous goddess" because of her bubbly personality and bottomless stomach. She periodically posts mukbang (eating show) streams on top of her regular videos. Kinoshita qualifies for my list because she will often cook or prep her own meals and, well, it's utterly fascinating seeing all that food disappear in one sitting (in my opinion). Watch her devour a 3-kg Giga pudding here.
